This role is responsible for the hands-on construction of scenic elements, set pieces, props, and custom-built environments, working directly from design renderings, technical drawings, and build plans to deliver finished structural components ready for painting and installation. The Scenic Carpenter brings a high level of woodworking and fabrication skill to every build. Proficiency in cabinetry, finish carpentry, joinery, and millwork techniques differentiates this role from a general scenic technician position. The work demands accuracy in layout and measurement, sound judgment in material selection, and the ability to problem-solve structural challenges on the fly without compromising the design intent. In addition to shop fabrication, the Scenic Carpenter participates in on-site installation, travel, and strike as project schedules require. This role reports directly to the Scenic Production Supervisor and is expected to operate with a high degree of self-direction, manage individual build tasks against production deadlines, and maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area at all times. Responsibilities Construct scenic set pieces, props, platforms, staging elements, and custom-built environments from wood, MDF, plywood, and composite materials, working directly from design renderings, technical drawings, and build plans Apply finish carpentry, cabinetry, joinery, and millwork techniques to produce high-quality structural components that meet the design's dimensional and aesthetic specifications Perform accurate layout and measurement for all builds, including transferring dimensions from drawings to material and cutting to precise tolerances Operate table saws, miter saws, routers, joiners, sanders, pneumatic tools, and other shop equipment safely and proficiently as required by each build Use jigs and time-saving production techniques to maintain build efficiency without sacrificing quality or accuracy Select appropriate materials, fasteners, and joinery methods for each structural application based on load requirements, finish needs, and project specifications Fabricate custom components and one-off pieces that do not follow standard templates, using creative problem-solving to achieve the design intent within the build's structural constraints Skills Finish carpentry, cabinetry, joinery, and millwork fabrication Layout, measurement, and precision cutting from technical drawings and build plans Table saw, miter saw, router, joiner, sander, and pneumatic tool operation Jig design and production efficiency techniques for repeat-component builds Scaffolding assembly and disassembly per OSHA standards Forklift and man lift operation (or willingness to certify) Company vehicle operation: pickup truck, box truck Basic surface preparation and sanding in support of painting operations Join us in creating extraordinary visual experiences!
