Statement of Duties Performs skilled laborer work with supervisory responsibility. Work involves exercising working supervision over a small crew of employees engaged in unskilled and skilled laboring tasks. Includes active participation in work supervised as well as assigning work, maintaining production, and providing supervisory advice and assistance .
Supervisory Responsibility:
Employee, as a regular part of the job, is required to lead other employees to assist them in completing their assigned work. Employee also performs non-supervisory work that is of the same kind and level as is done by the employee(s) being supervised. The employee is not responsible for taking any disciplinary action nor is the employee involved in the hiring process. Supervises and participates with crew in the planting, feeding, transplanting, topping, felling, trimming, pruning, spraying and removal of trees Supervises and participates in the preservation and treatment of diseased and decayed trees, shrubs and plants; cleans, prepares, sterilizes, fills cavities, places required bolts and cables, removes superfluous foliage, limbs along with dead, broker or damaged branches Participates in snow removal and sanding operations
Recommended Minimum Qualifications:
Work requires high school graduation or equivalent plus five years' experience in Public Works construction or maintenance work or any equivalent combination of education and experience required to perform the essential functions of this position. Must have considerable knowledge of methods, procedures, equipment and materials relating to a variety of construction and maintenance tasks. Ability to plan and supervise subordinates. Considerable knowledge in the hazards and safety precautions involved in work supervised. Ability to operate all equipment in work supervised. Possession of a valid Massachusetts drivers license required. CDL and hoisting required.
Knowledge, Abilities and Skill Knowledge :
Considerable knowledge of procedures, equipment, materials, and tools employed in repair, construction and maintenance of all aspects of parks maintenance. Ability to plan and supervise the work of subordinates. Considerable knowledge in the hazards and safety precautions involved in work supervised. Knowledge of irrigation systems a plus.
Abilities:
Ability to supervise small work crew; ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions; Ability to operate all equipment in work supervised. Ability to use a computer for email communications, time tracking, scheduling, and work order processing. Ability to lead and. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, the general public and others. Ability to communicate effectively and efficiently verbally and in writing at all times.
Skills :
Demonstrated skills in working cooperatively with other agencies, Town employees, and individuals in promoting the best delivery of services to the community. Excellent managerial, organizational and communication skills.
Physical Demands:
Work requires the exercise of physical strength and effort daily, such as, lifting heavy objects (up to 60 lbs.), carrying the object(s) and stacking them or placing them in a vehicle or storage area. In addition, pulling, pushing, standing, or walking for the full workday may also be involved. A great deal of physical effort must be exerted at this level.
Motor Skills:
Position requires the employee to exercise basic motor skills for activities such as the use of cleaning equipment and the operation of motor vehicle.
Visual Demands:
The employee is required to routinely read documents for general understanding and the operation of maintenance equipment in a safe and effective manner.
