Full-Time Position Summary Adaptive Management and Engineering, LLC (AME) is seeking a Laboratory & Field Technician to support geotechnical investigations, construction materials testing, laboratory testing, and construction quality control services. The position includes a combination of geotechnical drilling observation and logging, field testing, Daily Field Reports (DFRs), sample handling, laboratory testing, and construction observation . Entry-level and experienced candidates will be considered. Key ResponsibilitiesGeotechnical Field Investigation Observe and document geotechnical drilling and subsurface exploration activities. Prepare accurate field boring logs and soil descriptions. Visually classify soils using the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS) and applicable ASTM procedures. Record soil stratigraphy, color, consistency/density, moisture, sand, gravel, organics, and other significant conditions. Document drilling methods, borehole depths, sampling intervals, and drilling conditions. Record Standard Penetration Test (SPT) blow counts, penetration, recovery, and refusal conditions. Document Shelby tube, split-spoon, bulk, and other samples. Record groundwater observations and borehole conditions. Assist with CPT/CPTu and other geotechnical field investigations. Notify the project engineer of unexpected soil conditions, refusal, obstructions, groundwater issues, or deviations from the exploration plan. Daily Field Reports and Documentation Prepare complete and timely Daily Field Reports (DFRs) documenting, as applicable: Project, date, location, and weather Field and drilling personnel Boring/CPT identification and location Drilling and sampling methods Depths and sampling intervals SPT blow counts and sample recovery Groundwater observations Drilling resistance, refusal, or obstructions Equipment used Work hours, delays, and downtime Safety meetings and AHAs Significant field conditions and deviations Photographs and sample information Instructions or discussions with project personnel Maintain accurate field notes and submit reports within required project timelines. Sample Handling Properly identify, label, seal, transport, and store soil and construction material samples. Maintain sample traceability and chain-of-custody records. Verify boring number, sample number, depth, project number, and other required information. Protect samples from damage or conditions that may affect testing. Coordinate sample delivery to the AME laboratory. Construction Materials Testing Perform field density and moisture testing of soils and aggregate. Perform fresh concrete testing, including slump, air content, temperature, unit weight, and preparation of test specimens. Observe fill placement, compaction, subgrade preparation, and earthwork. Document test locations, results, lift thickness, and construction conditions. Assist with observation of foundations, piles, drilled shafts, ACIP/CFA piles, and other geotechnical construction activities as assigned. Promptly report failing tests or potentially nonconforming conditions. Laboratory Responsibilities Perform or assist with geotechnical and construction materials laboratory testing, including: Moisture content Atterberg limits Grain-size and hydrometer analysis Standard and Modified Proctor testing Specific gravity Unconfined compressive strength Soil classification Unit weight Concrete compressive strength Aggregate testing Sample extrusion and preparation Other assigned geotechnical laboratory testing Testing shall be performed in accordance with applicable ASTM, AASHTO, DOTD, USACE, project-specific, and AME procedures . Quality Responsibilities Accurately record field and laboratory data at the time work is performed. Review logs, DFRs, and test forms for completeness and accuracy. Maintain sample identification and traceability. Follow applicable testing standards and
AME QA/QC
procedures. Report unusual results, missing information, or testing issues to the project engineer or laboratory manager. Maintain testing equipment and identify equipment requiring calibration, repair, or maintenance. Safety Responsibilities Follow AME, client, contractor, OSHA, and project-specific safety requirements. Comply with
USACE EM 385-1-1
requirements when applicable. Participate in safety meetings, pre-task planning, and Activity Hazard Analyses (AHAs). Wear required PPE. Work safely around drill rigs, heavy equipment, traffic, excavations, and active construction operations. Immediately report unsafe conditions, incidents, or near misses. Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or GED. Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record. Ability to work outdoors and in active construction environments. Ability to safely lift and handle samples, concrete cylinders, and field equipment. Ability to perform basic calculations and accurately document field and laboratory data. Basic computer and electronic reporting skills. Ability to work independently after training. Willingness to travel to project sites and work flexible hours when required. Preferred Qualifications Preferred, but not required: Experience in geotechnical drilling, soil logging, construction materials testing, laboratory testing, or construction inspection. ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician certification. Nuclear density gauge certification. DOTD, AASHTO, NICET, or similar certifications. Familiarity with ASTM and AASHTO testing standards. Experience preparing boring logs and DFRs. OSHA or other construction safety training. Training and certification opportunities may be provided to qualified candidates. Work Environment This position involves both laboratory and field work on commercial, industrial, transportation, drainage, levee, foundation, and other civil infrastructure projects. Work may occasionally require early mornings, nights, weekends, or extended shifts based on project schedules.
