Job Summary AVELAR, a long-established forensic architecture and engineering firm headquartered in Walnut Creek, seeks an experienced CA licensed General Contractor or CA licensed Architect to lead and grow our Southern California office. Experience testifying in depositions and/or trial is required. The ideal candidate is a hands-on leader who will take on their own expert retentions while building the team and client relationships that make AVELAR a go-to name for Southern California attorneys, insurers, and property owners. The ideal candidate will have a strong comprehension of building functions, codes, and standard of care, and experience in the design, construction, investigation, and repair of existing buildings. This role works collaboratively with our Architects, Engineers, General Contractors, and support staff across both offices, and is ideal for a self-starter who exercises sound judgment, sets priorities, and meets critical deadlines. Full time, immediate opening.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Serve as a lead construction expert on construction defect, property loss, and premises liability matters, from site inspection through deposition and trial Conduct on-site inspections including field testing, sampling, and documentation Investigate and diagnose issues that relate to the building envelope, structural design, materials, and construction process Research building codes and contractor standard of care Review and approve investigative reports, repair / replacement scopes of work, and cost estimates Participate in client and expert meetings, mediations, depositions, and trials to explain findings and recommendations Lead, mentor, and grow the Southern California team of consultants and field staff Develop and retain client relationships with Southern California law firms, insurers, HOAs, and property managers, working with AVELAR's marketing and business development team Represent AVELAR at industry and bar association events Manage regional workload, staffing, and case intake in coordination with the Walnut Creek office Support Design & Reconstruction projects in the region, including scope writing and bid review for HOA clients

Qualifications and Skills:

15+ years of experience in the construction industry, with at least 5 years in forensic or litigation consulting General Contracting license (CA) and/or Architectural license (CA) required Expert witness experience, including depositions and/or trial testimony Working knowledge of building science and commercial and residential construction codes and standards Established relationships with Southern California construction defect and insurance attorneys a plus Experience leading and developing a team Advanced communication, organizational, and presentation skills Strong technical writing skills Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook); Xactimate a plus Ability to climb ladders and scaffolding and inspect attics and crawlspaces Ability to travel throughout Southern California and to the Walnut Creek office as needed Driver's license and automobile insurance must be in good and current standing

Pay:

$150,000.00 - $250,000.00 per year
