Job Description

Job Summary We are seeking a detail-oriented Permit Specialist for a contract opportunity in Mountain View, CA. This role supports a public-sector Building Inspection Division by processing permit applications, assisting customers, maintaining inspection records, and helping ensure development-related activities meet applicable requirements. This is a strong opportunity for an administrative support professional with experience in permitting, building inspection, planning, zoning, construction administration, or high-volume public contact environments. The Permit Specialist will work in a collaborative municipal setting with knowledgeable team members, structured processes, and meaningful work that directly supports community development and public service. Key Responsibilities
  • Process building permit and miscellaneous permit applications, ensuring required approvals and documentation are complete.
  • Review development applications at the counter for completeness and basic conformance with building codes, city requirements, policies, and procedures.
  • Respond to inquiries from developers, engineers, contractors, architects, city staff, and the public regarding permits, building codes, and development review requirements.
  • Calculate valuations, plan check fees, permit fees, and related charges, then collect and process fees accurately.
  • Prepare, organize, file, and maintain records related to building inspection, fire inspection, code enforcement, project data, and inspection activity.
  • Maintain statistical records, verify data, prepare basic reports, and operate standard office equipment and applicable computer systems. Compensation and Benefits
  • Pay rate: $42 to $50 per hour.

    Mountain View, CA. Required Qualifications and Skills
  • Process building and miscellaneous permit applications from intake through approval coordination.
  • Provide front-counter and phone-based customer service regarding building codes, permit regulations, and development review requirements.
  • Maintain complex records, project files, inspection data, and statistical reports.
  • Calculate permit fees, plan check fees, valuations, and related charges with accuracy.
  • 3 to 5 years of relevant administrative, clerical, or permit support experience.
  • Three years of increasingly responsible office or clerical experience involving extensive public contact.
  • Equivalent to completion of 12th grade, supplemented by college-level coursework in construction management or building inspection techniques.
  • Knowledge of building inspection division procedures, building terms, codes, construction practices, and materials.
  • Ability to read, understand, interpret, and explain rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Strong customer service skills with the ability to work effectively with city staff, contractors, developers, architects, engineers, and the public.
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to verify files, check data, maintain accurate records, and prepare reports.
  • Proficiency with standard office equipment, computers, filing systems, and applicable office software.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations and quickly process permit-related fees.
  • Strong written communication skills, including grammar, spelling, punctuation, and correspondence preparation. Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in planning, zoning, public building permit review, building inspection, code enforcement, or a related municipal environment.
  • Coursework or training in construction management, building inspection techniques, building codes, or development services.
  • Familiarity with permit tracking systems, municipal records, inspection data, or public-sector administrative processes.
