JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY
APV needs an experienced commercial estimator who can bid manufacturing work and learn how this shop actually builds parts. This is not entry-level. The person we hire will independently review complex RFQ packages, drawings, specs, BOMs, and technical data, then build a complete manufacturing estimate, including process, material, labor, outside processing, tooling, inspection, risk, lead time, and price. Familiarity with airplane parts is useful. What we need more is someone who understands a manufacturing operation like
APV:
our capabilities, our vendors, our lot sizes, and how we quote spare parts and production work so the bid is competitive and the job still makes money.
JOB REQUIREMENTS 1.1.
7+ years in aerospace or defense manufacturing estimating, manufacturing engineering, process planning, or closely related quoting work. 1.2. Demonstrated experience estimating complex build-to-print manufactured parts. 1.3. Experience preparing commercial bids and quotes, not only internal cost estimates. 1.4. Strong CNC machining and precision manufacturing knowledge. 1.5. Ability to interpret complex aerospace engineering drawings and
GD&T. 1.6.
Knowledge of aluminum, stainless steel, titanium, nickel alloys, and aerospace steels. 1.7. Experience determining machining setup and cycle times. 1.8. Understanding of tooling, fixturing, and programming requirements. 1.9. Experience with outside-process suppliers. 1.10. Experience developing material, labor, and processing costs. 1.11. Strong Excel skills and ERP/MRP experience. 1.12.
Highly Preferred:
a. Experience quoting spare-part or aftermarket manufacturing (what some customers, including Boeing, treat as Spares). b. Familiarity with a high-mix aerospace manufacturing shop like APV. c. Airplane or aircraft-component familiarity. d. Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, RTX/Raytheon, Bell, General Dynamics, or similar customer experience. e. AS9100 manufacturing environment. f. ITAR-controlled programs. g. NADCAP special processes. h. Complex assemblies and ground-support equipment. i. Welded aerospace assemblies. j. Electrical / cable assemblies. k. 5-axis machining. l. AS9102 First Article requirements. Low-volume, high-mix aerospace manufacturing.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES 1.1.
Review customer RFQs, engineering drawings, specifications, BOMs, models, and technical data package requests. 1.2. Build detailed cost estimates for aerospace and defense components, assemblies, and spare parts. 1.3. Prepare commercial bids, not just cost buildups. Set competitive price recommendations and work with management on margin. 1.4. Determine manufacturing methods and process sequences that match APV capabilities. 1.5. Estimate CNC machining, setup, programming, fabrication, welding, assembly, and inspection hours. 1.6. Evaluate 3-, 4-, and 5-axis machining requirements. 1.7. Determine raw-material requirements, sizes, yields, and scrap. 1.8. Identify tooling, fixturing, and
NRE. 1.9.
Identify and estimate outside processing: heat treat, anodize, plating, grinding, welding, NDT, and other special processes. 1.10. Obtain and evaluate supplier and subcontractor quotes. 1.11. Review GD&T, tolerances, and inspection requirements and flag cost and manufacturing risk. 1.12. Evaluate First Article and inspection requirements. 1.13. Review historical job performance and actual costs when estimating repeat or spare-part work. 1.14. Develop estimates for different production quantities and evaluate economies of scale. 1.1. Identify missing information, conflicting requirements, and technical risk before the quote goes out. 1.2. Develop realistic manufacturing and procurement lead times. 1.3. Work with management to set competitive pricing while holding margin. 1.4. Support customer clarification and negotiation. Mentor less-experienced estimators when appropriate.
