Job Description

Position Summary We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Steel Estimator & Detailer to prepare accurate cost estimates, material takeoffs, shop drawings, and fabrication details for structural and miscellaneous steel projects. This position will work closely with customers, project managers, engineers, fabricators, and field personnel to ensure projects are accurately estimated, clearly detailed, and efficiently produced. Key Responsibilities Estimating Review architectural, structural, and engineering drawings, specifications, and project documents. Prepare accurate material takeoffs for structural and miscellaneous steel. Develop detailed estimates for labor, materials, fabrication, equipment, subcontracting, finishing, and installation. Solicit and evaluate material pricing. Identify project requirements, exclusions, potential risks, and scope discrepancies. Prepare competitive bids and proposals within required deadlines. Communicate with customers, general contractors, engineers, and vendors to clarify project requirements. Assist with change-order pricing and project cost analysis. Maintain organized estimating files and historical pricing information. Steel Detailing Produce accurate shop and fabrication drawings for structural and miscellaneous steel. Develop piece marks, material lists, weld details, connection details, dimensions, and erection information. Review drawings for accuracy, constructability, and compliance with project specifications. Coordinate details with engineers, architects, fabricators, and project managers. Incorporate revisions and respond to RFIs and engineering comments. Ensure drawings are complete and ready for fabrication and field installation. Conduct final drawing checks before releasing work to fabrication. Qualifications 3+ years of experience in steel estimating, detailing, fabrication, or a related field preferred. Strong understanding of structural and miscellaneous steel fabrication and erection. Ability to read and interpret architectural, structural, and shop drawings. Knowledge of steel materials, shapes, connections, welding, fabrication processes, and erection practices. Proficiency with detailing/CAD software such as Tekla Structures, SDS/2, Advance Steel, Inventor, AutoCAD , or similar. Strong mathematical and measurement skills. Excellent attention to detail and accuracy. Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with a project team. Preferred Qualifications Experience estimating structural steel projects from plans and specifications. Experience producing fabrication and erection drawings. Familiarity with AISC standards and structural steel practices. Experience with steel estimating software or construction management systems. Knowledge of CNC fabrication, material optimization, and shop production processes. Previous experience working directly with general contractors, engineers, and steel fabricators.
