Structural Steel Estimator
Job Description
Position Summary The Steel Fabrication Estimator is responsible for preparing accurate and competitive cost estimates for structural steel and miscellaneous metals projects. This role involves reviewing project documents, performing detailed material takeoffs, analyzing vendor and subcontractor pricing, and developing comprehensive estimates that support successful project bidding and execution. The Estimator collaborates closely with project management, detailing, and fabrication teams to ensure estimates are complete, feasible, and aligned with company capabilities. Key Responsibilities Review architectural and structural drawings, specifications, and bid documents to prepare accurate material takeoffs and cost estimatesPerform detailed quantity takeoffs for structural steel, miscellaneous metals, and related fabrication processesSolicit, evaluate, and analyze pricing from vendors and subcontractors for materials, coatings, freight, and specialty itemsDevelop comprehensive project cost estimates, including labor, materials, equipment, subcontracted work, and overheadAssess project risks, scope gaps, constructability concerns, and schedule impacts during the estimating phasePrepare and submit timely, competitive bids and proposals in accordance with project requirements and deadlinesCollaborate with project management, detailing, and fabrication teams to ensure estimate accuracy and constructabilityReview and clarify bid scope, inclusions, exclusions, and assumptions with internal teams and customersMaintain and update historical cost data, production rates, and estimating benchmarksParticipate in bid reviews, project handoff meetings, and post-bid analyses to support successful project executionTrack bid results and provide feedback on market trends, pricing conditions, and competitive activityAssist with change order pricing, budget updates, and cost evaluations during project executionSupport continuous improvement of estimating tools, databases, and processes Required Qualifications High school diploma or GED requiredAssociate's or Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field preferredMinimum 3-5 years of experience in steel fabrication estimating, structural steel estimating, or a closely related roleStrong ability to read and interpret architectural and structural drawings and specificationsExperience with structural steel, miscellaneous metals, fabrication processes, and erection methodsProficiency with estimating software, spreadsheets, and takeoff tools (e.g., Tekla EPM, SDS/2, Bluebeam, Excel, or similar)Solid understanding of labor rates, shop productivity, and material pricing Preferred Qualifications Experience estimating commercial, industrial, or heavy structural steel projectsFamiliarity with AISC standards, AWS welding requirements, and industry best practicesKnowledge of coatings, galvanizing, and specialty steel finishesExperience working with both union and non-union labor environmentsPrior involvement in negotiated work, design-build, or GMP projects Skills & Competencies Strong analytical and mathematical skillsExcellent attention to detail and accuracyAbility to manage multiple bids and deadlines simultaneouslyEffective written and verbal communication skillsStrong organizational and time-management abilitiesAbility to work collaboratively with cross-functional teamsSound judgment and decision-making skillsProficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook)Ability to work independently while contributing to team goal
