In this role, you will be responsible for estimating, planning, coordinating, managing, and closing out structured cabling projects from initial opportunity through final completion. This position is responsible for developing accurate and profitable estimates, coordinating project resources, managing customer and contractor relationships, controlling project costs, identifying change orders, maintaining schedules, ensuring installation quality, and achieving successful project completion. The PM/Estimator is expected to protect the company's profitability, reputation, schedule, and customer relationships throughout the entire project. 1.
ESTIMATING RESPONSIBILITIES
Review incoming bid invitations and determine whether the project is appropriate for the company.
Review:
Plans Specifications Scope of work Addenda Bid forms Schedules Owner requirements General contractor requirements Determine project size, complexity, schedule, and manpower requirements. Identify potential risks before deciding to bid. Identify bid deadlines and required submissions. Determine whether the project fits company capabilities and capacity. B. Quantity Takeoffs Perform or verify detailed takeoffs for: Cat 5e/6/6A copper cable Fiber optic cable Backbone cabling Patch panels Jacks and faceplates Fiber enclosures Fiber cassettes Racks Cabinets Cable tray J-hooks Ladder rack Sleeves Pathways Innerduct Grounding/bonding Firestopping Labels Testing Certification Demolition Cable removal Miscellaneous materials C. Labor Estimating Determine realistic labor requirements based on: Cable quantities Cable type Installation environment Ceiling conditions Pathway availability Floor-to-floor requirements Cable tray J-hooks Conduit Lift requirements Core drilling Access restrictions Work hours Occupied versus new construction Number of telecom rooms Rack build-out Termination requirements Testing requirements Project schedule Develop labor estimates in hours , not simply dollars. The estimator should be able to explain: "This job requires approximately 2,400 field labor hours because..." rather than simply saying: "The software says 2,400 hours."2.
MATERIAL PRICING
Obtain current vendor pricing. Request quotations for major material packages. Verify manufacturer and product requirements. Identify material lead times. Identify price escalation risks. Include freight and delivery costs. Account for waste and reasonable material overage. Verify that quoted materials meet project specifications. Identify approved equals or alternates when appropriate. Maintain current pricing information. 3.
SUBCONTRACTOR & VENDOR QUOTES
When required: Obtain subcontractor pricing. Obtain lift/equipment pricing. Obtain coring/firestopping pricing. Obtain specialty fiber or testing pricing. Compare vendor/subcontractor proposals. Verify exactly what each quote includes and excludes. Ensure subcontractor scope matches the KTS estimate. 4.
ESTIMATE DEVELOPMENT
Prepare complete project estimates including: Direct labor Direct materials Equipment Subcontractors Freight Permits where applicable Testing Engineering/design Mobilization Travel Overtime Project management Overhead Contingency/risk Desired profit Review the estimate before submission to ensure that nothing has been missed. 5.
BID REVIEW & RISK ANALYSIS
Before submitting a proposal, identify: Ambiguous scope Missing information Conflicting drawings Unrealistic schedules Difficult access Night/weekend work Occupied facilities Excessive cable pathway requirements Material lead-time issues Customer-supplied materials Testing requirements Warranty requirements Liquidated damages Retainage Bonding requirements Insurance requirements Unusual payment terms Potential coordination problems Clearly document assumptions and exclusions. 6.
PROPOSAL DEVELOPMENT
Prepare professional proposals including: Scope of work Materials Installation requirements Testing Warranty Schedule assumptions Exclusions Alternates Pricing Terms and conditions Ensure that the proposal clearly defines what KTS is responsible for and what KTS is not responsible for. 7.
HANDOFF FROM ESTIMATING TO PROJECT MANAGEMENT
Once a project is awarded, conduct a formal estimate-to-project handoff.
Review:
Original estimate Labor budget Material budget Scope Exclusions Assumptions Change-order opportunities Schedule Customer expectations Special requirements Known risks Vendor quotes Subcontractor commitments The PM should understand why the job was estimated the way it was estimated. 8.
PROJECT START-UP
Review contract and purchase order. Review plans and specifications. Attend kickoff/preconstruction meetings. Establish project schedule. Establish manpower requirements. Coordinate material purchasing. Coordinate deliveries. Coordinate field personnel. Review site conditions. Identify conflicts before installation begins. Establish project communication procedures. 9.
FIELD PROJECT MANAGEMENT
Coordinate foremen and technicians. Assign manpower. Monitor daily progress. Conduct regular site visits. Verify workmanship. Monitor productivity. Resolve field issues. Coordinate with other trades. Maintain project schedule. Communicate schedule changes. Ensure materials are available when needed. Verify installation conforms to specifications and KTS standards. 10.
PROJECT FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT
The PM/Estimator is responsible for knowing the financial condition of every project.
Monitor:
Budgeted labor hours Actual labor hours Material budget Actual material costs Subcontractor costs Equipment costs Change orders Billing Receivables Forecast cost to complete Projected gross profit The PM should be able to answer at any time: What have we spent, what have we billed, what do we have left to spend, and what will we make when the project is finished?11.
CHANGE ORDER MANAGEMENT
The PM/Estimator is responsible for identifying and documenting work outside the original contract.

Additional cable Additional outlets Design changes Additional fiber Additional testing Relocation of cable Additional pathways Additional racks After-hours work Weekend work Demolition Rework caused by other trades Schedule delays Additional mobilizations Owner-requested changes
Process:
Identify the change. Document the change. Determine labor and material impact. Price the change. Obtain appropriate approval. Track the work separately. Bill the change. No significant extra work should be performed on a handshake. 12.
SCHEDULING
Develop project schedules. Schedule field personnel. Coordinate material deliveries. Coordinate inspections. Coordinate testing. Coordinate cutovers. Monitor project milestones. Identify schedule risks. Communicate delays. Adjust manpower when necessary. 13.
QUALITY CONTROL
Ensure that installations meet: Contract requirements Project specifications Manufacturer requirements Applicable codes TIA standards BICSI practices KTS installation standards
Inspect:
Cable support Bend radius Cable separation Labeling Termination Rack organization Patch panels Fiber management Grounding/bonding Firestopping Pathways Slack management Cable identification Testing KTS standard: If you can't identify it, access it, test it, troubleshoot it, or maintain it, the installation isn't finished.14.
TESTING & CERTIFICATION
Coordinate copper certification testing. Coordinate fiber testing. Verify test equipment requirements. Review test results. Identify failures. Coordinate corrective work. Ensure all required test results are delivered to the customer. Maintain testing documentation. 15.
CUSTOMER & GENERAL CONTRACTOR RELATIONSHIP
Serve as a primary point of contact for: General contractors Owners IT departments Facility managers Electrical contractors Other trades Vendors Responsibilities include: Responding promptly to questions. Attending meetings. Providing project updates. Resolving problems. Managing expectations. Maintaining professional relationships. Protecting the company's interests. 16.
PERSONNEL MANAGEMENT
Coordinate technicians and foremen. Match technician skills to project requirements. Monitor productivity. Address performance problems. Recognize good performance. Identify training requirements. Coordinate overtime. Resolve field conflicts. Communicate personnel issues to management. The PM should manage the work without unnecessarily micromanaging the technicians. 17.
SAFETY Ensure compliance with:
OSHA requirements Site-specific safety rules PPE requirements Ladder safety Lift safety Fall protection Electrical safety Proper tool use Housekeeping Material handling Immediately address unsafe practices. 18.

PROJECT CLOSEOUT
The PM/Estimator remains responsible until the project is completely closed.
Verify:
Installation is complete. Punch list is complete. Testing is complete. Labels are complete. As-builts are complete. Test reports are delivered. Customer sign-off is obtained. Change orders are finalized. Final billing is submitted. Retainage is addressed. Materials are returned where appropriate. Jobsite is clean. Warranty documentation is delivered. Final project profitability is reviewed. Skills Required 3-5+ years of structured cabling, low-voltage, telecommunications, electrical, or construction experience.
Technical Knowledge Strong understanding of:
