Job Description

Mechanical EstimatorPosition OverviewWe are seeking an experienced Mechanical Estimator to join our construction estimating team. The Mechanical Estimator will produce accurate, competitive bids and cost estimates for mechanical systems including HVAC, plumbing, piping, ductwork, chillers, boilers, hydronic systems, pumps, compressors and related equipment. The role requires detailed material and quantity takeoffs, development of bills of materials, unit and lump-sum pricing, job costing and coordination with vendors and subcontractors. The successful candidate will support preconstruction efforts, provide technical review of plans and specifications, participate in value engineering, and assist with procurement strategy and bid preparation to ensure cost-effective, buildable solutions.

Key ResponsibilitiesPrepare complete mechanical estimates and competitive bids for projects that include HVAC systems, ductwork, piping, plumbing, chillers, boilers, hydronic systems, pumps, compressors and air handling units (AHUs).Perform detailed material takeoffs, quantity takeoffs and develop accurate Bills of Materials (BOM).Develop cost estimates using unit-price and lump-sum methods, conceptual/budgetary estimating, and detailed estimating for project stages.

Apply RSMeans, vendor pricing, WinEst/Trimble, HCSS, PlanSwift, On-Screen Takeoff, Bluebeam and other estimating tools to support pricing and takeoffs.

Create labor productivity and manhour estimates, compile job costing and develop construction schedules in coordination with project teams.

Coordinate vendor and subcontractor pricing, prepare RFIs, review and manage change orders, and support procurement and sourcing activities.

Conduct site visits and field measurements, review shop drawings and isometrics, and ensure constructability and code compliance (ASME and applicable local codes).Analyze drawings and specifications using AutoCAD, Revit/BIM, and plan reading skills to identify scope, exclusions and risk, and to prepare accurate quotes.

Participate in value engineering workshops, propose alternatives to reduce cost or improve constructability while maintaining quality and performance.

Prepare detailed bid packages, pricing summaries and supporting documentation for internal review and client submission.

Maintain estimating databases and historical pricing, update unit pricing, and track assumptions used in estimates for transparency and future reference.

QualificationsMinimum 5 years of mechanical estimating experience in commercial, institutional, or industrial construction with a proven record of preparing successful bids.

Strong technical knowledge of HVAC systems, ductwork, piping, plumbing, chillers, boilers, hydronic systems, pumps, compressors, AHUs, sheet metal and structural steel estimating.

Proven experience with material takeoffs, quantity takeoffs, Bill of Materials (BOM) development, cost estimating, unit pricing and lump-sum estimating.

Familiarity with conceptual/budgetary estimating and detailed estimating practices, job costing, labor productivity and manhour estimating.

Proficiency with estimating and takeoff software such as PlanSwift, On-Screen Takeoff, Bluebeam, RSMeans, WinEst/Trimble, HCSS and advanced Microsoft Excel; experience with AutoCAD and Revit/BIM.Experience preparing shop drawings and isometrics, reading blueprints/plans and interpreting welding symbols and fit-up details.

Solid understanding of construction and mechanical codes (ASME and local regulations), insulation estimating and fabrication practices.

Excellent communication and negotiation skills for vendor/subcontractor coordination, RFIs, change orders and value engineering.

Ability to conduct site visits and field measurements, work under bid deadlines, and produce accurate, well-documented estimates.

Degree or diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Construction Management, Estimating, or related field preferred; certifications in estimating or HVAC construction are a plus.
