POSITION SUMMARY
: A Mechanical Equipment Operator - Grade I (MEO I) performs a variety of skilled tasks in the construction, maintenance, repair, and improvement of Town roads, grounds, equipment, facilities, drainage systems, and other public infrastructures. This role works under the general supervision of the General Foreman.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Operates a variety of trucks, construction equipment, mechanical equipment, and specialized machinery in connection with Town construction, maintenance, repair, and public works activity. Operates equipment including, but not limited to, dump trucks, payloaders, rollers, sewer and drainage machines, compressors, jack hammers, chainsaws, scoop buckets, power pick up sweepers, wing and rotary snowplows, and other equipment appropriate to the classification. Performs road construction, repair, and maintenance, and related activities, including excavation, grading, drainage work, patching, paving preparation, and restoration. Performs maintenance and repair of Town grounds, roads, drainage systems, facilities, and other public property. Performs snow and ice removal operations, including operating snowplows, spreaders, loaders, and other snow-removal related equipment. Loads, unloads, transports, and places materials, supplies, tools, debris, and equipment using appropriate vehicles and machinery. Performs manual labor associated with construction, maintenance, landscaping, roadside maintenance, debris removal, and other Public Works activities. Performs routine inspections of assigned vehicles and equipment before, during, and after operation. Sets up and maintains appropriate work-zone safety measures, including cones, signs, barricades, and other traffic-control devices.
REQUIREMENTS
: Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL). Knowledge of the safe operations of trucks, construction equipment, mechanical equipment, and power tools. General knowledge of construction, road maintenance, drainage, snow removal, and grounds maintenance practices. Ability to operate assigned equipment safely and efficiently. Ability to perform routine inspections and identify and report equipment malfunctions or unsafe conditions. Ability to perform strenuous physical labor for extended periods of time and work in varying weather and environmental conditions. Ability to comply with safety rules, departmental procedures, and applicable regulations. Ability to respond appropriately to emergency and changing work conditions.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Considerable physical strength and above average manual dexterity.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
This job operates in a Highway Maintenance facility or work zones. May involve exposure to noise, dust, or outdoor conditions. Requires the ability to work independently as well as a part of a team.
