The Equipment Operator III is a highly skilled position responsible for safely operating advanced heavy equipment used in the construction, repair, and maintenance of County roads, drainage systems, and rights-of-way. This position requires considerable independent judgment to evaluate jobsite conditions, select the proper equipment and operating methods, coordinate daily field activities, and complete assignments safely and efficiently. Work includes earthmoving, excavation, grading, compaction, material handling, vegetation management, roadway maintenance, and heavy-equipment transportation. The employee also provides technical guidance and hands-on assistance to less-experienced operators, promotes compliance with safety and operational standards, performs physical labor associated with field operations, and responds to emergency or after-hours assignments as required.

Responsibilities:

Maintains a professional, service-oriented presence and positive attitude for the County during all field operations. Operates advanced heavy equipment used for earthmoving, excavation, grading, compaction, material handling, vegetation removal and management, drainage maintenance, and roadway construction. Operates heavy-duty transport vehicles to haul oversized machinery and materials using dump trucks, grapple trucks, low-boys and multi-axle trailers in compliance with FDOT safety standards over

Performs complex roadway and right-of-way maintenance activities, including grading roads, excavating and cleaning drainage systems, installing culverts, loading and transporting materials, removing vegetation, and completing roadway repairs. Independently evaluates jobsite conditions and determines the appropriate equipment, attachments, and operating methods necessary to complete assigned work safely and efficiently. Performs routine service, minor repairs, preventive maintenance, and operational adjustments to assigned vehicles and equipment. Assists mechanics with diagnosing equipment issues and completing repairs when necessary. Provides operational guidance and on-the-job training to Equipment Operator I and Equipment Operator II employees, including instruction on proper equipment use and safe work practices. Coordinates equipment movements and work activities with supervisors, crew members, and other operators to maintain productivity and meet project schedules. Performs physical labor using essential site tools to complete work involving excavation, concrete finishing, drainage improvements, and the handling of wood, cement, asphalt, aggregates, and other construction materials. Performs and documents daily pre-operation and post-operation inspections, including checking fluid levels, safety devices, tires, attachments, and the overall operating condition of assigned equipment. Identifies unsafe conditions, equipment deficiencies, and operational concerns and promptly reports them to the appropriate supervisor. Operates additional vehicles, machinery, and specialized attachments as required to maintain departmental operations and work schedules Responds to emergency situations and after-hours assignments involving storm cleanup, roadway hazards, drainage issues, debris removal, and other public safety needs. Drives motor vehicle on a day to day basis as part of assigned duties. Performs related duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Some experience in the operation of varied heavy equipment and a combination of education, training, and experience which provides the following knowledge, skill, and abilities: Comprehensive understanding of safety protocols and best practices for the operation and preventative care of mobile machinery. Knowledge of all laws and county regulations pertaining to the operation of the equipment. Ability to make minor repairs to the equipment. Ability to accurately interpret and complex instructions provided through service requests, printed or digital work orders, and written or verbal directions. Responsible for all instructions to be logged in a daily time management data base. Ability to safely operate the assigned equipment during all types of weather conditions. Ability to perform the physical work related to the position. Skill in the operation of various types of medium and moderately complex equipment. Qualifications:

Possess and maintain a valid Florida CDL Class A driver license with Air Break and Tanker Endorsement for required travel. High School Diploma or GED. A minimum of three (3) years' experience with the ability to demonstrate skill in the operation of one or more pieces of Equipment Operator III level equipment; or a combination of education or experience equivalent to these requirements. Shall obtain a valid FDOT Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) Certification within six (6) months of employment. Employer conducts drug, motor vehicle check and background screening.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to see and hear (with or without corrective devices). Ability to reach, stand for long periods, walk, stoop and bend. Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds frequently. While performing the duties for this job, the employee will occasionally be exposed to fumes, chemicals or airborne particles. Ability to perform manual labor while exposed to all types of outdoor weather conditions. Noise level in this work environment is usually loud.
