Position Summary The Excavator Operator is responsible for safely and efficiently operating excavators to support site development, underground utilities, mass grading, excavation, and other heavy civil construction activities. This position requires the ability to operate equipment with precision while maintaining productivity, safety, and quality standards. The ideal candidate has experience operating heavy equipment, understands construction site operations, and takes pride in completing work accurately and efficiently. Key Responsibilities Safely operate excavators for excavation, grading, trenching, loading, and material handling activities. Perform excavation work for underground utilities, site development, drainage, and earthwork operations. Read and interpret site plans, grade stakes, and project specifications to complete work accurately. Perform digging, trenching, backfilling, loading trucks, and moving materials as directed. Maintain proper grades and elevations while operating equipment. Conduct daily pre-trip inspections and report any equipment issues or safety concerns. Perform routine equipment maintenance, including lubrication, cleaning, and basic troubleshooting. Work closely with Foremen, Superintendents, pipe crews, laborers, and other equipment operators. Follow all company safety policies, OSHA standards, and job site procedures. Maintain awareness of underground utilities and job site hazards. Assist with general labor duties when needed to support project completion. Keep work areas clean, organized, and safe. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications Minimum 2 years of experience operating excavators in heavy civil construction preferred. Valid CDL license required to operate company vehicle/equipment. Experience with underground utilities, site development, grading, or excavation required. Driving record check required. Ability to operate equipment safely and efficiently in active construction environments. Knowledge of excavation techniques, trench safety, and job site procedures. Experience with GPS machine control systems is a plus. Must be dependable, safety-focused, and able to work as part of a team. Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and perform physically demanding tasks. Ability to occasionally lift and carry materials weighing up to 50 pounds. Frequent sitting, standing, walking, bending, and reaching. Ability to climb in and out of equipment and trucks safely. Ability to perform routine vehicle inspections and job site tasks. May require working outdoors for extended periods. Work Environment The work environment characteristics described below represent the conditions an employee may encounter while performing the essential functions of this position. Primarily works on construction sites and roadways. Exposure to outdoor weather conditions, dust, noise, and changing job site conditions. Must follow all safety procedures and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE). Typical working hours are 7:00 AM - 5:30 PM (40-50 hours per week), with occasional overtime as needed to meet project deadlines.
