They operate specialized high-tonnage boom and rotator trucks to perform complex recoveries, upright overturned semi-trucks, and clear major traffic hazards under intense time and safety pressures.​
Core Responsibilities Incident Scene Management:
Secure crash sites, assess structural stability of overturned or jackknifed commercial vehicles, and coordinate with law enforcement and fire rescue teams.
Complex Rigging & Recovery:
Calculate load limits, center of gravity, and cable tensions to safely hoist, winch, and upright buses, tractor-trailers, and heavy machinery without causing further damage.
Heavy Towing Operations:
Secure and transport heavy-duty loads using specialized attachments (under-lifts, axle forks, air bags) while strictly adhering to state axle-weight limits and bridge laws.
Equipment & Scene Cleanup:
Manage fluid spills (fuel, hydraulic fluid), clear debris from roadways, and document scene conditions and cargo recovery details for insurance reporting.
Vehicle Maintenance & Safety Inspection:
Conduct thorough daily Pre-Trip and Post-Trip inspections on hydraulic booms, winches, cables, and brake systems to ensure total operational readiness.
Key Qualifications & Requirements Licensing:
Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL Class A) with endorsements (e.g., Tanker, Air Brakes) and a clean driving record.
Physical & Technical Demands:
Ability to lift 75+ lbs, work in extreme weather environments, and demonstrate advanced understanding of rigging physics and mechanical winching systems.
