(ENFIA)
JOB DESCRIPTION FOR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR 8/17/2026
OverviewFounded in the early 1980s, the Eastern National Forests Interpretive Association (ENFIA) was formed as a non-profit cooperating association operating in regions 8 and 9 of the USDA Forest Service. ENFIA promotes the historical, scientific, and educational activities of the Forest Service through the sale of interpretive material. ENFIA is dedicated to enhancing public understanding and appreciation of natural, cultural, and historical resources. ENFIA currently manages 31 outlets on 13 National Forests. Net sales have ranged from $156,000 in 2020 (during covid) to $670,000 in 2024. Average sales for the past five years is approximately $505,000. Position:
Executive Director The Executive Director of ENFIA is the Chief Executive Officer and serves at the discretion of the Board of Directors. They have overall strategic and operational responsibility for ENFIA's staff, programs, and expansion. They are committed to vendor and National Forest relationships and execution of ENFIA's mission. They develop deep knowledge of the National Forest and outlets that are part of ENFIA, and the core programs, operations and business plans for each outlet.
Key Responsibilities Leadership and Management:
  • Responsible for direct interaction with the Board of Directors. This interaction consists of recommendations of policies, direction, and activities to the Board and carrying out the policies and direction established by the Board.
  • Responsible for the day to day management and operations of the Association including staffing of the office, hiring, firing and supervision of personnel and servicing Forest Service outlets and positive vendor relationships.
  • Provides training for Forest Service liaisons, as well as representing the Association at official functions as designated by the Board.
  • Maintains the effective financial systems and adequate record keeping, to track scaling progress, and regularly evaluate program components, so as to measure successes that can be effectively communicated to the board and the affiliate branches.
  • Develops the annual budget, tracks the budget, and reports on the budget to the Board.
  • Maintains all cooperative agreements and positive communication with National Forests, the ENFIA board, and interprets ENFIA/Board policies.
Fund raising and
Communications:
  • Expands local revenue generating and fund raising activities to support existing program operations.
  • Deepen and refine all aspects of communications—from web presence to external relations with the goal of creating a stronger presence.
  • Use external presence and relationships to garner new opportunities.
  • Continue to personally develop professionally in the areas of administration and management.
  • Maintain open communication with forests within the Association and with non-profit natural resource organizations.
Planning and New Business:
  • Designs and completes the strategic business planning process for ENFIA.
  • Creates and maintains strong partnerships with National Forests.
  • Communicates ENFIA's mission within National Forest service areas without outlets.
  • Presents ENFIA mission to other organizations.
  • Be an external local and national presence to publish and communicate program results with an emphasis on the successes of the local program as a model for the National Forests.
Evaluation and Reporting:
  • Assess program effectiveness through participant feedback and attendance metrics.
  • Prepares regular reports on program outcomes and impact for board meetings and funding purposes.
