Raw Materials Buyer Purchasing Coordinator United Aluminum North Haven, CT Job Details Full-time $90,000 - $100,000 a year 1 day ago Benefits Health savings account Paid holidays Disability insurance Health insurance Dental insurance 401(k) Flexible spending account Paid time off 401(k) matching Life insurance Qualifications Teamwork Microsoft Excel Spot buying Supply chain ERP systems Materials management in manufacturing Manufacturing facility experience Vendor relationship management Purchasing Critical thinking Manufacturing company experience Time management Full Job Description Raw Materials Buyer and Purchasing Coordinator United Aluminum | North Haven, CT United Aluminum Corporation is a 5th-generation, family-owned specialty rolling mill producing Custom Rolled® Aluminum Coil in North Haven, Connecticut. Since 1915, United Aluminum has sustainably grown while fostering a culture of collaboration and building a reputation for customer excellence. Our modern and clean manufacturing facility is conveniently located off I-91. Our team is growing, and we have an immediate opportunity for an experienced Raw Materials Purchasing professional to join our small materials purchasing department. This is a full-time, on-site position in North Haven, Monday through Friday during regular business hours. Working closely with the Senior Materials Manager, you will help ensure adequate raw materials are available to reliably meet current and anticipated production requirements and customer needs. To be successful in this position, you should bring strong purchasing and critical-thinking skills, metals raw-materials knowledge, supply-chain business acumen, proficiency working within an ERP system, and the ability to anticipate needs and proactively prevent inventory shortages. This is not a purchase-order processing role. The successful hire will use experience, data and independent judgment to determine what materials to purchase, when to purchase them and in what quantities. The ERP system provides important information, but purchasing decisions must also account for production demand, inventory levels, supplier lead times, minimum-order quantities, market conditions, pricing trends, tariffs and supply-chain risk. This is initially an individual-contributor position without direct reports. It is well suited to an experienced, hands-on purchasing professional who wants to learn United Aluminum's operation, contribute to increasingly strategic purchasing decisions and grow into a Manager position. United Aluminum utilizes a proprietary ERP system that supports our business and manufacturing processes. Your onboarding and training will include learning this system while developing a strong understanding of our business processes, internal manufacturing capabilities, role in the supply chain, and our vendors' capabilities and product lines. As you become acclimated to the role and our operation, you will have an active voice in purchasing and inventory-management decisions. Responsibilities Communicate with raw-material suppliers regarding purchase-order placement, lead times and delivery status. Ensure timely and effective interdepartmental communication with Sales, Accounting, Production Control, Quality Control, Process and Receiving regarding issues related to metal purchasing. Work with customs brokers and international freight forwarders on the import and delivery of overseas materials. Develop and maintain strong vendor relationships. Manage vendor rejections from initiation and material disposition through credit and final resolution. Review vendor sales-order acknowledgements for accuracy against purchase orders placed. Participate in vendor meetings and communicate with members of the Vendor Committee and vendors as necessary. Evaluate MRP and ERP recommendations against actual inventory, production forecasts, open orders, supplier lead times and changing customer demand before placing orders. Determine appropriate purchase timing and quantities rather than relying solely on system-generated prompts. Execute spot buys when necessary to prevent production interruptions, respond to unexpected demand or take advantage of favorable market conditions. Identify emerging shortages and excess-inventory risks early, evaluate alternatives and recommend corrective action. Monitor metals markets, supplier pricing, lead-time changes, tariffs and geopolitical conditions that may affect material availability or total landed cost. Negotiate pricing, minimum order quantities, lead times, freight terms, payment terms and other commercial conditions with suppliers. Compare suppliers based on total cost, quality, delivery performance, capacity, responsiveness and supply risk—not price alone. Develop contingency plans for sole-source materials, delayed shipments, supplier capacity constraints and other disruptions. Maintain appropriate safety-stock, reorder-point and inventory parameters based on consumption, forecast accuracy and replenishment risk. Guiding Qualifications Degree preferred; however, relevant education, training and demonstrated purchasing or manufacturing experience will be strongly considered. Coursework or experience in Supply Chain, Business, Mathematics or Accounting is especially relevant. At least five years of hands-on purchasing experience in a manufacturing environment, including direct responsibility for raw-material purchasing, inventory planning and supplier management. Experience purchasing metals, mill products, aluminum, steel, coil, sheet, wire or another specification-driven industrial raw material is strongly preferred. Experience working within an ERP system. Familiarity with trade laws, tariffs, Incoterms and international freight forwarding. Strong time-management, multitasking and organizational skills. Excellent analytical, critical-thinking and problem-solving skills. Proactive approach with the ability to anticipate material requirements and follow issues through to resolution. High degree of accuracy, reliability and attention to detail. Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications including Outlook, Excel, Word and Teams. Commitment to work on-site in North Haven Monday through Friday during regular business hours.
