McGee Automotive Family has been in business since 1977 and currently has thirteen dealerships located across Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, Rhode Island, New Hampshire and Vermont. This position offers a flexible schedule. The opportunity to work from home on occasion may be possible. This position will be responsible for developing and executing a centralized purchasing strategy that ensures each dealership has the right vehicles, at the right cost, in the right market, at the right time . Ideal Candidate The successful candidate is more than someone who can "buy cars." They understand why a vehicle should be purchased, what it should cost, where it should be retailed, and how quickly it should turn . The ideal candidate understands the automotive wholesale and retail markets, has a strong eye for vehicle value, is an excellent negotiator, and can use market data to make disciplined purchasing decisions. This is a high-impact role with direct influence on inventory availability, gross profit, inventory turn, and overall dealership performance.
Compensation:
$ 100,000 - $200,000 per year Key Responsibilities Vehicle Acquisition Develop and execute a group-wide used vehicle purchasing strategy aligned with sales objectives, inventory requirements, and profitability goals. Purchase used vehicles through auctions, dealer trades, wholesalers, direct-to-consumer purchases, trade-ins, service-lane opportunities, and other approved acquisition channels. Attend physical and online auctions and establish strong relationships with auction representatives, wholesalers, dealers, and other vehicle sources. Identify and pursue direct purchase opportunities from consumers. Review incoming trade opportunities and determine whether vehicles should be acquired for retail, wholesale, or declined. Negotiate purchase prices and terms to maximize potential gross profit and minimize acquisition risk. Maintain consistent purchasing standards across all dealerships in the group. Market & Inventory Analysis Monitor local, regional, and national used vehicle market trends. Analyze market demand, days-to-turn, inventory age, pricing, sales history, and competitive inventory. Determine the appropriate make, model, trim, mileage, price point, and equipment mix for each dealership. Monitor inventory levels across all locations and identify shortages, overstock, and aging inventory. Recommend adjustments to purchasing strategy as market conditions change. Utilize automotive valuation, inventory management, CRM, auction, and market-pricing technologies to support purchasing decisions. Dealership Collaboration Work closely with General Managers, General Sales Managers, Used Car Managers, Service Managers, and inventory teams across the group. Communicate purchasing opportunities and inventory needs to individual dealerships. Determine the best dealership location for acquired vehicles based on market demand, pricing, and inventory requirements. Partner with the reconditioning and service departments to evaluate repair costs and time-to-market. Assist Used Car Managers with inventory strategy and aging-unit decisions. Provide leadership with regular reporting on acquisition activity and purchasing performance. Performance & Profitability The Corporate Used Car Buyer will be accountable for measurable purchasing results, including: Number of vehicles acquired Acquisition cost Purchase-to-market position Gross profit on acquired vehicles Inventory turn Average days in inventory Reconditioning cost Days-to-retail Wholesale performance Return on investment Inventory mix and availability Qualifications 3+ years of automotive dealership experience preferred. Previous experience as a Used Car Buyer, Used Car Manager, Inventory Manager, Automotive Appraiser, Auction Buyer, or similar role. Strong understanding of used vehicle valuation and current market conditions. Demonstrated ability to negotiate vehicle purchases effectively. Experience with wholesale and/or retail vehicle auctions. Strong understanding of vehicle condition, reconditioning requirements, and retail marketability. Comfortable analyzing data and using market-pricing and inventory-management tools. Strong financial and analytical skills with the ability to understand gross profit, ROI, turn rate, and acquisition cost. Excellent communication and relationship-building skills. Highly organized with exceptional attention to detail. Ability to make timely purchasing decisions in a fast-paced environment. Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.
