Job Description

Chief Operating Officer (COO) Circle Z Construction LLC — Cortez, Colorado Overview Circle Z Construction is a growing underground utility contractor operating in the Four Corners region, specializing in trenching, HDD, and fiber-optic, power, and water infrastructure. We are a real company with real crews, real equipment, real risk, and real opportunity. This role is not cosmetic. We are searching for a second-in-command —someone capable of eventually running the company day-to-day while the owner steps back into a strategic role. If you are looking for comfort, consensus, or corporate politics, this is not for you. If you want responsibility, authority, and the opportunity to build something that matters, keep reading. The Mission Your job is simple to state and hard to execute: Build Circle Z from a strong operator into a scalable, disciplined, $8-12MM business in the first two years. That means growing customer base, tightening systems, enforcing standards, developing people, protecting margin, and running the machine when the owner is not present. You are not here to assist. You are here to own outcomes . Responsibilities You will have real authority and real expectations, including: Operations & Execution Own day-to-day company operations across crews, projects, and schedules Enforce execution discipline: timelines, job costing, change orders, closeout Identify bottlenecks and eliminate them—fast Ensure field and office are aligned and accountable People & Accountability Lead, develop, and, when necessary, remove team members Set and enforce standards without drama or hesitation Build leaders beneath you, not dependents above you Protect company culture by action, not slogans Financial Discipline Protect margin and cash flow Work alongside ownership on budgeting, forecasting, and scaling strategy Approve company spending as required Understand that every decision has financial consequences Scaling the Business Help transition the company from "owner-dependent" to "system-driven" Build processes that survive growth Prepare the company for its next phase—scale, leadership depth, and optional exit Authority This is not a paper title. Full authority to hire and fire Authority to manage vendors, subs, and contracts Autonomy to run operations within agreed strategic guardrails Direct access to ownership, with trust earned through performance Requirements We are not looking for credentials. We are looking for capacity .
You should bring:
Proven experience running operations, teams, or a P&L Comfort making hard decisions without needing permission High personal standards and intolerance for excuses Calm under pressure and capable of carrying weight A builder's mindset—systems, people, outcomes Industry experience is helpful but not required. Competence, integrity, and drive are mandatory.
Compensation Base salary:
$75,000 - $150,000 (commensurate with capability) Performance upside: Yes—tied directly to company results Long-term opportunity: Potential ownership for the right person who proves they belong This role is designed for someone who wants to earn into Ownership, not be handed it. Final Word This position will challenge you. It will demand judgment, stamina, and accountability. It will also give you real authority, real trust, and a real chance to build something rare. If you are a killer, disciplined, relentless in the pursuit of excellence, never quit, and understand that long-term losing is not an option—Circle Z may be the place you've been looking for.
