Job Summary The Costco Leadership Development Manager is a long-term development position designed to prepare a high-potential individual for future leadership within the Costco account. The primary purpose of this role is to develop a comprehensive understanding of the Costco business by gaining hands-on experience in all major areas of the account . Over several years, the individual will rotate through and work alongside the teams responsible for operations, sales, product management, allocation, finance, quality, transportation, customer relationships, and field leadership. This position is not primarily responsible for training other employees or developing future leaders. Instead, the individual will learn by doing , taking on increasing levels of responsibility, and gaining the knowledge, experience, and business judgment necessary to eventually assume a director-level position. The goal is to develop an individual who understands the Costco account from both a field and corporate perspective and can lead multiple functions of the business.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES 1.
Costco Account Operations Gain a comprehensive understanding of how the Costco account operates from beginning to end. Work alongside Regional Managers, District Managers, and Merchandisers to understand day-to-day Costco operations. Learn Costco expectations, policies, procedures, systems, and business practices. Participate in location visits and work directly in the field to understand operational challenges and opportunities. Learn how decisions made at the corporate and management levels affect field execution. Take on increasing operational responsibility as knowledge and experience develop. Develop the ability to identify operational issues and determine appropriate solutions. 2. Field Management Experience Spend considerable time working alongside District Managers and Merchandisers in Costco locations. Learn the responsibilities associated with managing employees in the field. Gain experience with scheduling, staffing, attendance, performance management, merchandising, inventory, shrink, sales, and customer relationships. Learn how to establish expectations and hold employees accountable. Participate in employee and operational problem-solving. Develop an understanding of the relationship between field execution and overall account performance. Eventually assume responsibility for selected locations, projects, or districts as experience and readiness increase. 3. Sales, Shrink & Business Management Develop a strong understanding of Costco sales performance and sales trends. Learn how to analyze sales, shrink, inventory, sell-through, and other key business metrics. Understand the relationship between sales, product availability, labor, shrink, cost of goods, margin, and profitability. Learn to identify business trends and opportunities. Participate in business reviews and management meetings. Develop the ability to evaluate performance and create appropriate action plans. Gain experience with budgets, forecasts, financial reporting, and profitability. Understand how decisions throughout the account impact the overall financial performance of the business. 4. Product Management Develop a thorough understanding of the floral products sold through Costco. Learn product mixes, garden bunches, substitutions, quality requirements, packaging, and merchandising standards. Understand how product decisions affect sales, shrink, cost, and profitability. Participate in product reviews and planning meetings. Work with Director of Operations, Buying and Farm Liaison to understand product selection, pricing, costs, and availability. Gain exposure to farm sourcing, production, quality control, and product flow. Develop an understanding of seasonal and holiday product requirements. 5. Allocation & Inventory Management Learn the allocation process and how product is distributed throughout the Costco account. Understand how sales trends, inventory levels, shrink, and product availability influence allocation decisions. Gain hands-on experience with allocation tools, reports, and systems. Learn how additional deliveries and inventory adjustments are determined. Develop an understanding of Costco ordering, guesstimates, promotions, and future product requirements. Work closely with the Allocation team to understand the connection between forecasting, purchasing, allocation, and field execution. 6. Forecasting & Holiday Planning Learn the Costco forecasting and projection process. Gain experience with guesstimates, promotions, and seasonal planning. Understand how projections are developed, communicated, and adjusted. Learn how projections affect farm production, transportation, labor, inventory, and Costco space. Participate in holiday planning and execution. Develop a comprehensive understanding of the planning process from initial projection through final delivery and field execution. 7. Transportation & Supply Chain Gain exposure to the transportation and logistics functions supporting the Costco account. Learn how shipping schedules are developed based on routes, pallet configurations, delivery requirements, and truck efficiencies. Understand the relationship between transportation decisions, product quality, cost, and service. Visit facilities and transportation operations as needed. Develop an understanding of the complete product flow from farm to Costco location. 8. Quality Control & Product Standards Learn the quality standards expected by Costco and Kendal Floral. Gain experience with product quality inspections and quality issues. Understand how product quality affects sales, shrink, customer satisfaction, and profitability. Work with Quality Control, Production, Farm, and Field teams to understand quality expectations. Participate in resolving quality issues and identifying opportunities for improvement. 9. Costco Customer Relationship Develop a strong understanding of the Costco customer and its expectations. Participate in Costco meetings and customer interactions as appropriate. Learn how Regional Managers and District Managers develop and maintain relationships with Costco management. Understand Costco's business priorities, expectations, and operating philosophy. Develop professional communication and relationship-management skills. Learn how to represent Kendal Floral professionally with Costco at the warehouse, regional, and corporate levels. 10. People & Human Resources Gain hands-on experience managing people within the Costco account. Learn recruiting, hiring, onboarding, training, scheduling, performance management, and employee accountability. Understand company policies and Human Resources procedures. Participate in employee relations situations as appropriate. Learn how to effectively communicate expectations and address performance issues. Develop an understanding of the challenges associated with managing a large field-based workforce. Partner with Human Resources to understand employment practices and leadership responsibilities. 11. Systems, Reporting & Administrative Processes Develop proficiency in the systems and tools used to manage the Costco account. Gain experience with Webflowers, PowerBI, AMP, Relex and other internal systems. Learn the reporting processes used to monitor sales, shrink, inventory, allocation, and profitability. Understand invoice reconciliation, RTV credits, orders, projections, and other administrative processes. Become proficient in the Excel-based tools used throughout the account. Develop the ability to interpret data and use it to make business decisions. 12. Cross-Functional Business Experience The individual will work directly with and gain experience in multiple areas of the Costco account, including: Senior Director of Sales Director of Operations Regional Management District Management Merchandisers Allocation Product Management Sales Operations Quality Control Production Transportation Farm Operations Human Resources Finance The expectation is that the individual will learn the responsibilities and challenges of each function rather than simply observe them . As experience increases, the individual will be expected to take on progressively greater responsibility within these areas.
DEVELOPMENT & PROGRESSION
This position is intended to be a multi-year development path , not a short-term training assignment. The individual will progress through different areas of the Costco account based on business needs, performance, aptitude, and readiness. Phase 1
- Learn Develop a strong understanding of the Costco account and gain hands-on experience in each major function. Phase 2
- Perform Take ownership of specific responsibilities, projects, locations, or business functions and demonstrate the ability to independently manage them. Phase 3
- Lead Assume increasing responsibility for people, business results, projects, and/or geographic areas. Phase 4
- Director Readiness Demonstrate the business knowledge, leadership ability, financial understanding, decision-making skills, and customer relationships necessary to assume a future Director-level position.
Progression through these phases will be based on demonstrated capability and business needs rather than a predetermined timeline.

Develop the leadership skills necessary to eventually manage managers and multiple functions. Establish credibility with both field employees and senior leadership. Ultimately demonstrate readiness to assume a director-level role within the Costco account.
LONG-TERM OBJECTIVE
The long-term objective of this position is to develop a future Director of the Costco account who has firsthand experience and a deep understanding of the entire business. Rather than moving directly into a leadership position without experience across the organization, this individual will spend several years learning, performing, and taking ownership of the different functions that make the Costco account successful . The expectation is that, over time, the individual will progress from learning the business to managing portions of the business, to being capable of leading the business at a director level. Primary Focus Learn the entire business. Master each function. Take on increasing responsibility. Develop into the next generation of Costco leadership.
