POSITION REQUIREMENTS
Individuals seeking employment with the Byram Police Department to work in a non-sworn position must: 1. Be a United States citizen. 2. Be at least eighteen [18] years of age. 3. Never have been convicted of a felony, or a misdemeanor involving moral turpitude. 4. Be free of misdemeanor convictions for the last twelve [12] months. 5. Have no previous or current charges of driving while Intoxicated or driving under the Influence of drugs or alcohol. 6. Be subject to a thorough background investigation and personal interviews by agency personnel. 7. If served in the armed forces of any country, demonstrate stability, reliability, and integrity, by having an Honorable Discharge [Dishonorable or General discharges are not acceptable]. 8. Demonstrate a good financial credit rating for the last five [5] years. 9. Demonstrate reading and comprehension skills in the English language to at least the 8th grade level through interviews and written demonstration of proficiency. 10. Demonstrate honesty and integrity by successfully completing pre-employment drug testing. 11. Be fingerprinted and subjected to a search of local, state, and national records and fingerprint files. 12. Be able to occasionally lift 10+ pounds. 13. Work in a confined area for eight [8] or more hours and remain seated for long periods of time. 14. Be subject to sitting, standing, reaching, walking, twisting, and kneeling to perform the essential functions.
SPECIFIC DUTIES
The Public Safety Dispatcher will: 1. Upon assuming duties each working day, review general orders and directives for recent changes. 2. Receive emergency messages via various communications and properly process and dispatch appropriate police and fire personnel and equipment. 3. Demonstrate effective communications skills, especially when communicating with agitated or distraught members of the public. 4. Collect all pertinent information from callers and relay to police officers and fire fighters via the two-way radio. 5. Maintain radio contact and status with police officers and fire fighters in the field. 6. Assist in training all new Communications Dispatchers to policies and procedures of the Byram Police Department and the 911 Communications Center. 7. Receive and transmit messages between other public safety agencies as needed. 8. Maintain Mississippi Telecommunicator Certification. 9. Document incident information in the Computer-Aided-Dispatch (CAD) system. 10. Maintain accuracy of information entered into the CAD system. 11. Assist in testing radios and making routine announcements via the police radio. 12. Operate standard office machines and equipment to include computers, printers, calculators, radio, telephone, and software.
