This is not a desk manager position. We are looking for someone who understands the entire used vehicle business—from acquiring the right inventory and accurately appraising trades to controlling recon, pricing vehicles correctly, managing aging inventory and ultimately producing profitable retail sales. The Used Vehicle Director will have significant responsibility and authority over the used vehicle operation at both locations and will work directly with ownership. The position will require regular scheduled travel between our Ford dealership in St. Ignace and our used vehicle operation in North Muskegon. Responsibilities The Used Vehicle Director will oversee the complete used vehicle lifecycle across both locations, including: Develop and manage used vehicle inventory strategies for both dealerships Source and acquire retail inventory through trades, auctions, street purchases and other channels Appraise trades and establish appropriate ACVs Monitor auction purchases, transportation, recon and total cost-to-market Establish and manage appropriate stocking levels and inventory mix for each location Review inventory pricing and market position regularly Create and enforce 30/45/60/90-day aging strategies Make timely retail, wholesale, price-adjustment and inventory-transfer decisions Identify opportunities to transfer vehicles between locations based on market demand Manage used vehicle reconditioning timelines and expenses Work closely with service and detailing teams to improve time-to-line Ensure vehicles are properly merchandised, photographed, described and advertised Monitor leads, VDP activity, pricing and competitive market data Coach and hold sales teams accountable for used vehicle performance Assist local management with deal structure and sales strategy when needed Monitor retail and wholesale gross profit Minimize unnecessary wholesale losses and aged inventory Develop alternatives to excessive auction dependence Establish processes for acquiring vehicles directly from consumers Provide ownership with regular reporting on inventory, sales, aging, gross, recon and profitability What We're Looking For We are looking for an experienced automotive professional who can run a used vehicle business—not simply manage a sales desk.

Proven automotive used vehicle management experience Strong vehicle appraisal skills Experience buying and selling vehicles at auction Strong understanding of market-based inventory pricing Experience managing aged inventory Demonstrated ability to manage recon expenses and timelines Strong understanding of used vehicle gross and inventory turn Ability to identify profitable inventory based on individual market conditions Experience coaching and developing sales professionals Strong organizational and analytical skills Ability to make decisions independently and take ownership of results Comfort working directly with dealership ownership Willingness to travel regularly between North Muskegon and St. Ignace Ford dealership experience is helpful but not required. Experience with inventory management and market-pricing platforms is strongly preferred. How We Measure Success This position will be evaluated on results, including: Used retail volume Used vehicle departmental profitability Front-end gross profit per retail unit Inventory turn Average inventory age Percentage of inventory over 60 days Recon cost and cycle time Wholesale gains and losses Appraisal and acquisition performance Overall return on used vehicle inventory Compensation This position offers a competitive base salary plus significant performance-based earning potential.
Base Salary:
Expected Total Compensation:
$75,000-$150,000+ based on performance Performance compensation will be tied to measurable results including used vehicle profitability, retail volume and inventory performance. A company vehicle and fuel will be provided for required business travel. Why This Position Is Different This is an opportunity to build and lead a multi-location used vehicle operation with significant autonomy. You won't be joining a large corporate dealer group where every inventory decision is dictated by someone several levels above you. You'll work directly with ownership and have the ability to implement processes, improve inventory strategy and see the financial impact of your decisions. We're looking for someone who sees a used vehicle department as a business within the business and knows how to make it perform. If you have successfully managed used inventory, understand how to buy vehicles correctly, know when to retail versus wholesale and can demonstrate measurable results from your previous dealership, we would like to hear from you. Please apply with your resume and a brief description of the size and performance of the used vehicle operation you have previously managed.
