Pet Retail Inventory & Receiving Specialist woofmeow - Derry, NH Part-Time with Opportunity to Grow into Full-Time Monday-Friday $20-$24/hour, based on experience woofmeow is looking for a detail-oriented, numbers-minded Pet Retail Inventory & Receiving Specialist to join our team. This is a somewhat unique position, so we want to be upfront about what the job actually involves. This is not a traditional receiving or stocking position. Our sales floor team handles putting merchandise away. Your job is to make sure that what we ordered, what arrived, what we were charged, and what ultimately enters our inventory system are all correct. That sounds simple—but in the pet industry, it often isn't. We work with numerous vendors and distributors and receive several orders throughout the week. Every vendor handles invoices, discounts, promotional pricing, credits, case quantities, and specials a little differently. On top of that, our current POS and receiving systems require more manual work and additional steps than we would like. We're looking for someone who doesn't just enter the numbers in front of them. We need someone who is willing to stop and ask: "Does this actually make sense?" What You'll Be Doing A large portion of this position involves receiving and reconciling vendor orders. You'll take invoices and compare them against what was actually scanned and received, making sure quantities, products, costs, discounts, and credits are correct. When something doesn't match, you'll need to figure out why.

Your responsibilities will include:

Receiving and reconciling orders from multiple pet-industry vendors and distributors Comparing vendor invoices against scanned and physically received merchandise Verifying product quantities, costs, discounts, promotions, and case quantities Performing recounts when physical inventory doesn't match an invoice or our system Identifying shortages, overages, incorrect products, incorrect costs, and other discrepancies Communicating with vendors and distributors to resolve discrepancies Requesting credits when appropriate and tracking outstanding credits until they are received Adding new products into our POS system Reviewing costs and helping establish appropriate retail pricing for new products Recognizing when promotional or special invoice pricing should not be used as an item's normal everyday cost Updating pricing when vendor costs change Performing cycle counts throughout the store Locating merchandise when physical inventory doesn't match our system Understanding that products may be displayed in multiple locations throughout the store Making inventory corrections when appropriate Completing price changes and ensuring updated pricing is reflected correctly Traveling to our Dover location approximately one day per week to perform similar inventory work Our sales floor employees handle the normal stocking and merchandising of received products. This position is primarily focused on the accuracy, paperwork, systems, pricing, and problem-solving side of inventory. Pet Industry Experience Is Strongly Preferred Previous pet retail, pet distribution, or other pet-industry experience is stronglypreferred for this position. This isn't simply because we sell pet products. The pet industry can be unusual. Different product categories have very different pricing and margin structures. Vendors handle promotions differently. Invoice specials don't necessarily represent the true everyday cost of an item. Products can have unusual case quantities, and something that looks perfectly normal on an invoice may actually be incorrect. Pet product knowledge helps you recognize when something just doesn't look right. A bag of dog food, aquarium, supplement, dog toy, treat, and piece of pet equipment cannot necessarily be approached the same way when determining appropriate retail pricing. You will not be expected to independently make major pricing decisions when you first start. We'll teach you our pricing structure, vendors, expected margins, and procedures. As you gain experience and demonstrate an understanding of our business, there will be opportunities to take on more independence. We will consider candidates without direct pet-industry experience who have exceptionally strong inventory, purchasing, receiving, or similar experience and are eager to learn the industry. However, candidates with previous pet-industry experience will be strongly preferred. What We're Looking For This position requires an unusual combination of analytical ability, attention to detail, and practical problem-solving. We're looking for someone who: Has strong basic math skills Is comfortable working with costs, percentages, discounts, and margins Has excellent attention to detail Has strong critical-thinking and problem-solving skills Doesn't automatically assume the computer or invoice is correct Is comfortable investigating discrepancies Can work independently once trained Is organized and capable of keeping track of unresolved issues Will follow up on a vendor credit instead of assuming it was taken care of Is comfortable learning multiple vendors and their different processes Has good computer skills Is willing to physically go onto the sales floor and locate/count products when necessary Has reliable transportation between Derry and Dover Most importantly, we're looking for someone who gets satisfaction from figuring things out. Sometimes resolving an issue means checking an invoice. Sometimes it means recounting a product, reviewing the original order, checking previous costs, finding merchandise somewhere else in the store, or contacting the vendor. Finding the discrepancy is only the first step, we need someone who wants to understand why it happened and make sure it gets resolved. Schedule This position will start aspart-time, approximately 20-30 hours per week, Monday through Friday. The position is primarily based at our Derry location, with approximately one day per week at our Dover location. Weekend work is generally not required. We occasionally receive a Saturday delivery, particularly during the holidays, but other members of our team are capable of handling those deliveries when necessary. Opportunity to Grow into Full-Time For someone looking for full-time employment, there is an opportunity for this position to grow as you become proficient in the role. The core inventory, receiving, pricing, and reconciliation responsibilities don't necessarily require 40 hours every week. Rather than adding unnecessary responsibilities simply to call the position full-time, we're advertising it based on the actual needs of the role. If you're interested in eventually working full-time, additional responsibilities can be added based on your strengths and the needs of the business. This could include scanning incoming orders when they arrive and assisting with other inventory or operational responsibilities. Compensation $20-$24 per hour, based on experience. Relevant pet-industry experience, inventory/receiving experience, product knowledge, and experience working with invoices, purchasing, pricing, or vendor discrepancies will all be considered when determining starting pay.
