Full Job Description Salary:

$43,947, plus benefits (which include medical, dental, the option to defer compensation and membership in the NYS retirement system). Salary is subject to tier increase for the first 5 years and negotiated increase thereafter.

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES

The Parks Laborer performs indoor and outdoor building and grounds maintenance work related to the operation and maintenance of municipal parks, community centers, a pool facility, ballfields and other municipal facilities as needed. The incumbent assists Parks staff as needed to meet goals of the department and perform other related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under the supervision of the Parks Groundskeeper or designee, the incumbent assists in the operation and maintenance of municipal facilities and grounds performing semi-skilled and unskilled manual labor in addition to other general responsibilities of the department.

EXAMPLES OF WORK

(ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY): Operates various equipment including but not limited to, various power and non-power tools in the trimming and/or removal of brush and trees in park areas. Assists in grounds maintenance, including seasonal care of trees, shrubs, flowers, ground preparation for lawn rejuvenation. Assists in preparation of athletic fields for play including cutting grass, removing litter/debris, lining fields. Operates power equipment such as lawn mowers, grass cutters, etc. in the maintenance, mowing, raking and cutting of grass in municipal parks and fields. Performs maintenance of paths, driveways and parking lots including sweeping of areas, snow removal and minor black top repair. Cleans swimming pool and assists with the balancing of chemicals in pools.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND ATTRIBUTES

Knowledge of equipment operations including but not limited to operating mowers, small engine equipment, shop tools, heavy-duty trucks, beautification, irrigation and athletic field maintenance. Ability to conduct inspections, maintain records and repair logs. Ability to follow oral instructions; ability to get along well with others; ability to read, write, speak, understand and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the essential duties of the position; industrious in work performance; physical strength and agility; physical condition commensurate with the duties of the position. Ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

Employee is required to operate automotive equipment and must be in possession, at time of appointment, of a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State.
