Ruth's House of Hope (RHOH) is seeking a compassionate, strategic, and mission-driven leader to serve as our next Executive Director. This is an exceptional opportunity to lead an organization dedicated to providing hope, stability, and life-changing support to women and children. The Executive Director will work collaboratively with the Board of Directors, staff, volunteers, donors, and community partners to advance our mission, strengthen organizational capacity, and guide Ruth's House of Hope into its next chapter of sustainable growth and impact. Position Summary The Executive Director is the chief executive and organizational leader of Ruth's House of Hope. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director is accountable for advancing the organization's mission, implementing Board-approved strategy, developing staff and organizational capacity, ensuring financial sustainability, and maintaining high-quality, safe, and compliant services. The Executive Director leads through the leadership and management team, delegates day-to-day operations appropriately, and retains accountability for the organization's overall performance. The Executive Director serves as the primary staff liaison to the Board and as a principal ambassador for RHOH in the community.
PRIMARY AREAS OF FOCUS
Strategic Leadership and Organizational Development Lead the implementation and periodic review of the Board-approved strategic plan. Translate strategic priorities into annual organizational goals, measurable outcomes, and an aligned allocation of staff and financial resources. Assess community needs, organizational performance, opportunities, and risks to guide sustainable growth and continuous improvement. Ensure that programs, operations, facilities, technology, and partnerships support RHOH's mission and strategic direction. Provide the Board with timely, accurate, and relevant information needed for effective governance and strategic decision-making. Staff Leadership and Development Build, lead, coach, and hold accountable an effective leadership and management team. Establish clear organizational expectations, decision-making authority, performance standards, and accountability. Foster a healthy, collaborative, inclusive, trauma-informed, and mission-driven workplace culture. Ensure effective systems for recruitment, onboarding, supervision, performance management, professional development, succession planning, and staff retention. Ensure personnel practices comply with applicable employment laws, licensing requirements, organizational policies, and sound human resources practices. Support staff well-being while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries and accountability for organizational results. Fundraising and Resource Development Lead a diversified and sustainable fundraising and revenue-development strategy aligned with organizational priorities. Establish annual fundraising goals and monitor results in partnership with development staff and the Board. Cultivate, solicit, and steward relationships with major donors, foundations, corporations, government funders, and community partners. Engage and support Board members in fundraising, donor relations, community advocacy, and ambassador responsibilities. Strengthen public awareness of RHOH's mission, community impact, programs, and funding needs. Ensure fundraising practices, grant administration, donor records, and restricted funds are managed responsibly and in compliance with applicable requirements.
ADDITIONAL EXECUTIVE ACCOUNTABILITIES
Financial Stewardship Develop and manage the annual operating budget and long-term financial plan in partnership with staff and the Board. Monitor revenue, expenses, cash flow, reserves, internal controls, financial forecasts, and organizational risk. Provide the Board with timely and understandable financial reports, projections, and recommendations. Ensure resources are used responsibly and in alignment with the mission, strategic plan, legal requirements, grant and contract obligations, and Board policy. Work with appropriate staff, accountants, auditors, and Board committees to ensure accurate financial reporting and completion of required filings, audits, or financial reviews. Identify emerging financial concerns and recommend timely corrective action. Program Quality, Safety, and Compliance Ensure programs are safe, effective, person-centered, trauma-informed, and responsive to the needs of those served. Establish and monitor appropriate measures of program quality, organizational performance, and community impact. Ensure compliance with applicable laws, licensing standards, contracts, reporting obligations, confidentiality requirements, and organizational policies. Maintain appropriate systems for risk management, emergency preparedness, data security, incident response, and business continuity. Ensure significant safety, compliance, or service concerns are addressed promptly and reported to the Board when appropriate. Program and Property Operations and Financial Sustainability Provide leadership and oversight to maintain appropriate, mission-aligned, and financially sustainable occupancy and utilization across RHOH's residential and program facilities. Monitor occupancy, vacancies, admissions, referrals, length of stay, turnover, capacity, and related operational and financial trends. Identify barriers affecting occupancy or program utilization and direct appropriate strategies to address them. Balance occupancy and revenue objectives with established eligibility requirements, resident needs, service quality, safety, staffing capacity, and RHOH's mission. Ensure facilities are maintained in a safe, functional, compliant, and fiscally responsible manner. Report regularly to the Board regarding occupancy and utilization performance, significant trends, emerging concerns, and corrective actions. Community Leadership and Partnerships Serve as a principal spokesperson and ambassador for RHOH while protecting resident, employee, donor, and organizational confidentiality. Build productive relationships with community partners, funders, public agencies, elected officials, referral sources, service providers, and other stakeholders. Advocate for women, children, families, people experiencing homelessness or housing instability, individuals working toward safe and stable independent living, and other vulnerable populations served by RHOH. Identify and pursue partnerships that strengthen services, improve community impact, and advance the organization's mission. Represent RHOH professionally in community, regional, and statewide settings. Board Partnership and Governance Support Maintain a transparent and professional relationship with the Board and respect the distinction between Board governance and Executive Director/staff management. Keep the Board informed of organizational performance, finances, significant developments, emerging opportunities, and material risks. Recommend strategies, policies, budgets, and major initiatives for Board consideration and implement Board-approved decisions. Support effective Board and committee work by providing appropriate information, staff assistance, orientation, and education. Assist the Board in maintaining effective governance practices without assuming responsibilities reserved for the Board. Participate in the Board-led process for establishing annual Executive Director goals and evaluating performance. Decision-Making Authority The Executive Director has authority to make administrative, personnel, financial, operational, and programmatic decisions within the Board-approved budget, organizational policies, bylaws, delegated authority, and applicable law. Matters reserved for Board approval include the strategic plan, annual budget, significant changes in mission or organizational direction, major capital or debt commitments, Executive Director compensation, and other decisions identified in the bylaws, Board policy, or applicable law. The Executive Director is expected to delegate routine operational decisions to qualified staff while retaining accountability for organizational performance and results.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and relevant professional experience. Significant progressive leadership and management experience, preferably in a nonprofit, human services, housing, or community-based organization. Demonstrated success in strategic planning, organizational leadership, staff development, and performance management. Working knowledge of nonprofit budgeting, financial reporting, internal controls, and financial decision-making. Experience contributing to fundraising, grant development, donor relations, or other revenue-development activities. Experience working effectively with a governing board and leading through managers or other organizational leaders. Strong judgment, integrity, communication, relationship-building, problem-solving, and organizational skills. Ability to manage sensitive information and lead effectively in complex, changing, or high-pressure circumstances. Preferred Qualifications Executive or senior leadership experience in a nonprofit organization. Experience serving women, children, and families—including individuals experiencing homelessness, housing instability, domestic violence, or substance use disorders—and supporting their progress toward safe, stable, and independent living. Experience with residential, transitional housing, shelter-based, or related human-services programs. Experience with grants, government funding, compliance requirements, and community partnerships. Knowledge of trauma-informed, strengths-based, and person-centered practices. Experience working in a rural or small-community environment. The Executive Director must maintain eligibility under applicable Minnesota licensing and regulatory requirements and be able to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation. Additional conditions may include maintaining a valid driver's license, acceptable driving record, and required automobile insurance when travel or transportation is an assigned responsibility.

Full-time, exempt/salaried
Work Schedule:
Primarily Monday through Friday. Evening and weekend work is periodically required for Board and committee meetings, fundraising activities, community events, emergencies, and other organizational responsibilities.
Work Location:
Primarily onsite at the RHOH outreach office and other RHOH program or residential locations, with community-based work as required.
Travel:
Ability and willingness to travel locally and regionally, as needed, to attend meetings, cultivate community partnerships, support fundraising activities, participate in organizational events, and fulfill the responsibilities of the position. Occasional evening and weekend travel may be required.
Background Screening:
Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of all job-related background screening requirements established by RHOH, including a Minnesota Department of Human Services NETStudy 2.0 background study.
Reporting Relationship:
Reports to the Board of Directors, typically through the Board Chair for routine administrative coordination.
Performance Evaluation:
Subject to an annual performance evaluation conducted by the Board, with periodic progress reviews based on Board-approved goals and performance expectations.
Employment Relationship:
Employment with RHOH is subject to approval by the Board of Directors and is at will, meaning either the Executive Director or RHOH may end the employment relationship at any time, with or without notice or cause, subject to applicable law.
Compensation and Benefits Compensation:
The annual salary range for this position is $65,000-$88,000. The starting salary will be determined based on the selected candidate's relevant experience, education, leadership background, and alignment with the position's responsibilities.
