Ironwood Springs Christian Ranch, Stewartville, MN Reports to: Board of Directors About Ironwood Springs Christian Ranch Ironwood Springs is a Christ-centered retreat and camp ministry dedicated to serving individuals and families of all abilities. Through outdoor adventure, intentional hospitality, and faith-based programming, we seek to create a place where lives are transformed by the love of Jesus. Our Executive Director serves as the spiritual and strategic leader of this mission. Position Summary The Executive Director provides the primary day-to-day leadership for Ironwood Springs Christian Ranch ("ISCR"), advancing its mission and ministry while balancing an ambitious vision with financial solvency. Working in partnership with the Board of Directors, the Executive Director ensures personally or through staff that the responsibilities below are carried out with diligence, integrity, and faithfulness to the values of ISCR. This is a leadership and oversight role. The Executive Director sets direction, builds, and shepherds a healthy team, stewards' resources, and leads fundraising, while holding overall accountability for the ranch's operations, ministry impact, and long-term viability. Character & Leadership Traits Mature in Christian faith maintaining personal devotion and study, regularly attending church, and in full agreement with Ironwood's statement of faith, statement of purpose and doctrinal statements. High personal integrity and trustworthiness. Detail-oriented, able to manage the complexity of a year-round schedule that balances facility rentals, programs, and ministry. A clear, warm communicator with staff, guests, donors and volunteers. Outgoing and service oriented. A self-starter who takes initiative to improve the operation of the ranch. Works well within a team. Committed to ongoing growth in leadership through peer camps, professional development, and other opportunities. Key Responsibilities Operations Oversight Provide high level oversight of all facets of the operation to ensure they are carried out with excellence and efficiency leading primarily through capable staff rather than direct execution.
Areas of oversight include:
Programs and ministry activities Facility rentals and fee-based activities Marketing and communications Livestock management Land management and farming Facilities management buildings, grounds, septic systems, wells, and activity areas Hospitality services, including custodial and food service Volunteer management Accounting and bookkeeping Emergency management Technology, physical infrastructure, management systems, and online services Ensure operations and facilities meet all applicable local, state, and federal laws and regulations, including timely inspections and licensing. Staff Leadership & Care Ensure the organization is adequately staffed within budget while supporting a healthy work life balance, and shepherd the team toward both faith and professional growth.
Hiring:
Hire all direct reports and ensure a consistent onboarding process for new employees.
Performance:
Ensure performance appraisals are conducted on an annual basis.
Compensation:
Review and adjust compensation in line with role, cost of living, and merit; recognize exceptional performance through comp time, bonuses, or awards.
Development:
Encourage professional development through staff activities, continuing education, and conference participation.
Policy:
Maintain a staff policy manual documenting HR procedures, paid time off, benefits, and related practices.
Pastoral care:
Shepherd staff through faith building activities, model organizational values, and communicate with grace and truth.
Communication:
Communicate organizational goals, policies, mission, and values to staff on a regular basis.
Accessibility:
Remain open and approachable to all staff. Financial Stewardship & Viability Develop and manage resources sufficient to ensure the financial health of the ranch, in concert with the Board Finance Committee. Lead staff and the Board in developing the annual budget. Submit to the Board an annual budget and regular financial statements that accurately reflect the organization's financial position. Manage the ranch's financial resources consistent with the approved budget, providing responsible oversight of all financial activity. Participate in annual audit activities. Fundraising & Donor Development Because ISCR provides many programs at free or reduced cost, fundraising and donor development are vital to the ministry. Set and execute annual fundraising goals and activities, including signature events such as the Miracles Happen gala or Night at Ironwood. Carry out a donor appreciation plan, timely acknowledgements, ongoing communication and input, and year-end giving and appreciation events. Communicate directly and regularly with key donors. Encourage estate planning and gifts to the endowment fund. Community Relations & Visibility Serve as the lead spokesperson for the organization. Recruit, empower, and retain volunteers to support ranch programming. Participate in community activities that raise the visibility of Ironwood's mission and position the ranch as a resource for businesses, organizations, churches, and individuals. Cultivate partnerships with other organizations that are consistent with the mission. Long-Term Viability & Succession The Executive Director, together with the Board, is responsible for the long-term viability of the organization, sustained through the following practices: Develop and document policies and procedures. Create and promote capital fund giving for facility upkeep. Ensure adequate insurance and legal protection including umbrella liability coverage for ranch resources, staff, volunteers, and Board members. Maintain 2-year, 5-year, and 10-year planning processes for budgeting, fundraising, and capital improvement. Develop staff with succession in mind, so that key activities continue when staff are absent or transition out. Board Partnership & Governance Support Work in cooperation with the Board of Directors to ensure the long-term success of the organization. Participate in all Board meetings and provide regular, relevant updates to the Board. Communicate openly with the Board, supplying the information it needs to function well and make informed decisions. Serve on relevant Board committees, including the Finance and Fundraising committees. As an employee, the Executive Director is not a voting member of the Board. Other Duties As with all ranch staff, the Executive Director fills various roles as needed to accomplish the mission from assisting with guest activities to lending a hand with facility tasks. Qualifications & Preferred Experience Required Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in camp management, hospitality, business, nonprofit leadership, ministry or a related field. Demonstrated management and leadership experience. Comfort learning and mastering technology, including reservation, accounting, and facilities-management software; proficiency in Microsoft Office. Preferred Finance or accounting experience. Fundraising, donor-development, or nonprofit board experience. Background in a camp, retreat, hospitality, or faith-based ministry setting. Key Competencies Visionary yet financially disciplined leadership. Sound judgment and the ability to delegate and oversee rather than do everything directly. People leadership hiring, developing, shepherding, and retaining a healthy team. Relational skills with donors, partners, and the wider community. Organization and follow through across budgets, plans, and reporting. Work Schedule & Expectations Regular office hours: Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM-4:30 PM Flexibility required for evening and weekend hours during events or guest hosting Expected overtime: approximately 10-20 hours per week during peak seasons
