• Pleasanton, CA
• Full-time 71,000-80,000/year (DOE) You already know the system wasn't built for neurodivergent children. Join us in serving them in more affirming ways. Big Minds Unschool is a nonprofit, attachment-based, community-focused school for twice-exceptional (2e) students in grades K-8: kids who are gifted and disabled. We maintain a 4:1 student-to-teacher ratio, and learning happens 1:1 or in small groups through projects tailored to each student's passions and strengths. Our curriculum is rooted in disability justice. We teach our students that being 2e makes them part of a larger community, and that the problem was never them; it's that school wasn't designed for them. Many of our students arrive carrying school-based trauma. Our job is to give them a safe place to de-school, learn to trust adults and peers again, and grow into thoughtful, articulate people who can advocate for themselves. We focus on social-emotional development as the foundation for cognitive and creative growth. Why this role, and why now? We're looking for our next Pleasanton Site Director, someone who will lead our campus community by example: students, coaches, and families alike. You won't be thrown in the deep end.
This is a train-to-lead role:
November 2026 - June 2027: Learn alongside us. You'll start this November and train across the rest of the 2026-27 school year with the current site director. You'll sit in on intake and shadow weeks, spring conferences, progress reports, staffing, and the daily rhythm of the campus, picking up responsibilities as you're ready. Summer 2027: Take the lead. After our last day of school on June 9, 2027, you'll step fully into the Site Director role, managing summer enrollment opportunities, and lead Pleasanton into the 2027-28 school year, starting in August. Who are we hoping to find? You're likely a great fit if you: Are deeply committed to neurodivergent-affirming education and care, and to disability rights and justice Can read an assessment and see the whole kid behind it, not just the scores Lead with patience, empathy, and curiosity, especially when a student (or adult) is having a hard day Are comfortable with non-linear learning, and are flexible and open-minded about what "school" can look like Like wearing a few hats; we're a growing school, and things evolve Communicate warmly and clearly with families, including in hard conversations A plus if you have teaching or education administration experience as well as IEP and SPED law knowledge. Lived experience as a neurodivergent or disabled person, or as a family member of one, is genuinely valued here. What you'll do Lead people Hire, onboard, train, and support coaches and staff Observe and mentor faculty, facilitate twice-yearly performance reviews (October and May), and model reflective, growth-oriented practice Supervise daily campus activities Support students. Your workday is an on the "floor" type of admin role. Most of your "office" time is on Fridays Review applications and interpret assessment data Observe prospective students during shadow week and make enrollment recommendations Introduce new students to staff, share their strengths and needs, and match them with the right coaches Step in with support for safety, academic, behavioral, and health concerns Work with teachers on curriculum themes and write the narrative portion of student progress reports Partner with families Respond to families within 24 hours on work days, by phone, email, or in person Schedule and lead fall and spring parent-teacher conferences Take part in monthly Parent Information Nights and host at least two campus or virtual events a year Own intake: tours, applications, shadow weeks, intake committee meetings, enrollment decisions, and vaccination records Run the campus Oversee the facility, scheduling, supplies, and field trips Approve payroll (minimal as most faculty are salaried), manage records, and keep us compliant with state, federal, CDPH, and county health requirements Review the site's monthly P&L and conduct an annual site audit Lead Back-to-School Night, end-of-year celebrations, and graduation celebrations Schedule Monday-Thursday, 8:00 AM-4:00 PM, in person at our Pleasanton campus No school on Fridays; our school week runs Monday-Thursday Friday is for administrative work and meetings, and you must be available remotely from 8:30-3:30. Some weeknight evenings (1.5 -2 hours for each event) for Parent Information Nights, Back to School Night, and 3-4 weekend (2-3 hours for each event) community and end-of-year events Pay and benefits 71,000-80,000/year, depending on experience Health insurance, retirement plan, and paid time off are part of the compensation package Bereavement leave, CFRA/FMLA, Pregnancy Disability Leave, and lactation accommodation Livescan fingerprinting reimbursement Our annual calendar includes Fall Break, a two-and-a-half-week Winter Break, Presidents' Week, and Spring Break. There is very little expectation of work during these break times, aside from occasional site needs. Requirements Bachelor's degree U.S. work authorization Cleared Livescan background check and TB test before working with students Completion of required trainings (mandated reporter, harassment prevention, workplace violence prevention) You belong here People of color, neurodivergent people, disabled people, and LGBTQ+ people are strongly encouraged to apply. Our students deserve to see adults who share their experiences leading confidently and proudly. If you're not sure, check every box, apply anyway. We care more about who you are and how you show up for kids than about a perfect résumé. Big Minds Unschool is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and an equal opportunity employer. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, national origin, age, disability, or any other protected status. Qualified applicants with arrest or conviction records will be considered in accordance with the California Fair Chance Act. If you need an accommodation at any point in the application process, just let us know. To apply, submit your résumé along with a letter of introduction telling us why neurodivergent-affirming education matters to you and what you can bring to our community. These are both requirements of your application. Applications submitted without both will not be considered. We want to ensure folks want to genuinely engage with us, and this is part of that process.
