Operations Manager Waste Advantage Commerce City, CO Job Details Full-time $110,000 - $130,000 a year 2 hours ago Benefits Health insurance Dental insurance Paid time off Parental leave Vision insurance Qualifications Customer communication Customer retention Performance management Team development Organizational skills Account management Full Job Description Position Summary Waste Advantage is seeking a hands-on, entrepreneurial Operations Manager to lead the day-to-day operations of our Colorado waste hauling business. This position will have significant responsibility and autonomy. The Operations Manager will oversee daily dispatching, drivers, fleet readiness, customer service, safety, and overall execution of the operation. During the company's early growth stage, this individual will be expected to wear multiple hats and help wherever needed, including assisting with customer relationships and business development as time allows. This position is intended to function as the day-to-day leader of the Colorado operation. The President will remain actively involved in strategy, growth, major customer relationships and financial decisions, but the Operations Manager should be capable of running daily operations without continuous direction or supervision. The successful candidate must be comfortable working in an entrepreneurial environment where resources are lean, job responsibilities overlap, and leaders are expected to solve problems directly rather than simply pass them to another department. The ideal candidate is someone who understands waste hauling or a similar transportation-intensive business, is comfortable making decisions independently, and enjoys building an operation rather than simply managing an established system. Initially, this role will manage an operation of approximately 3-5 trucks , with the expectation that the position and team will grow as the company expands. The Operations Manager will work closely with the President , who will provide strategic oversight and support, and a dedicated salesperson , who will lead new business development. The Operations Manager will have primary responsibility for making sure the operation performs successfully every day. Primary Responsibilities Dispatch & Daily Operations During the company's initial growth stage, the Operations Manager will personally manage day-to-day dispatching and routing. As the fleet grows, this responsibility may transition to a dedicated dispatcher reporting to the Operations Manager. Manage daily dispatching for roll-off operations. Build and adjust daily routes and schedules to maximize driver productivity, service quality, and equipment utilization. Coordinate deliveries, exchanges, removals, scheduled services, and special customer requests. Respond quickly to missed services, equipment issues, driver call-outs, weather disruptions, and other operational challenges. Communicate clearly with drivers throughout the day and make real-time adjustments when necessary. Ensure customer commitments are completed accurately and on schedule. Driver Management Establish a culture of professionalism, accountability, safety, and strong customer service. Provide direct day-to-day leadership for company drivers. Manage driver schedules, attendance, performance, productivity, and accountability. Conduct regular driver meetings and individual coaching. Assist with recruiting, interviewing, onboarding, and training new drivers as the company grows. Address performance or behavioral issues promptly and appropriately. Ensure drivers follow company policies, DOT requirements, safety procedures, and customer-specific requirements. Fleet & Equipment Management Maintain responsibility for the operational readiness of the truck fleet. Monitor vehicle condition, mileage, inspections, preventative maintenance, and repair needs. Coordinate repairs and preventative maintenance with internal or third-party maintenance providers. Review driver vehicle inspection reports and ensure identified issues are addressed. Minimize truck downtime through proactive maintenance planning and timely repair decisions. Maintain visibility into the status of every truck and major piece of equipment. Help manage container inventory and ensure containers are available where and when needed. Coordinate vehicle registrations, inspections, permits, and other fleet-related requirements as appropriate. Customer Service & Account Management Serve as an operational point of contact for customers when needed. Resolve service issues quickly and professionally. Build relationships with key customers and understand their operational needs. Work closely with the President and salesperson to ensure commitments made during the sales process can be executed operationally. Identify opportunities to improve service, increase service frequency, add equipment, or otherwise expand existing customer relationships. Protect customer retention by addressing problems before they become larger issues. Sales & Business Development This is first and foremost an operations leadership position. Once the daily operation is running effectively, we encourage the Operations Manager to develop customer relationships, identify opportunities in the field and generate or close business. As operational responsibilities allow, the Operations Manager may: Identify prospective customers encountered in the field. Develop relationships with contractors, property managers, facilities, and other potential customers. Generate sales leads Assist with site visits and operational evaluations for prospective customers. Help determine appropriate service levels, equipment needs, and operational pricing assumptions. Sell new business directly when appropriate. Identify opportunities to expand services with existing customers. The Operations Manager will not be expected to replace the company's dedicated salesperson but should have the commercial awareness to recognize and pursue opportunities. Safety & Compliance Take ownership of the safety culture within the operation. Ensure drivers and employees comply with DOT, OSHA, company, and other applicable safety requirements. Conduct regular safety discussions and reinforce safe operating practices. Review accidents, incidents, injuries, property damage, and near misses. Assist with accident investigations and corrective actions. Monitor driver performance and address unsafe behavior. Ensure required inspections, records, documentation, and training remain current. Operational & Financial Management Understand the basic economics of the hauling operation and make decisions with profitability in mind. Work with the President to establish operating targets and continuously improve performance. Help control overtime, unnecessary mileage, repair costs, and other operating expenses. Provide regular reporting to the President regarding operational performance, staffing, fleet condition, and significant customer issues. Leadership & Company Building Because Waste Advantage Colorado is a growing operation, this position will play an important role in building the company's culture and operating systems. The Operations Manager will be expected to: Create structure where structure does not yet exist. Help develop operating procedures and standards. Recommend technology, processes, staffing, and equipment improvements. Identify problems and propose solutions rather than simply escalating issues. Take ownership of the operation and make reasonable decisions independently. Help hire and develop the team required as the company grows. Maintain a clean, organized, professional yard and operating environment. Establish systems that allow the business to scale beyond its initial fleet. Authority & Decision Making The Operations Manager is expected to operate with a high degree of independence. Within company policies and established budgets, the Operations Manager should be comfortable making routine decisions involving: Dispatch and routing Driver scheduling Customer service recovery Minor repairs and maintenance Vendor coordination Container allocation Employee coaching Operational purchasing Day-to-day staffing decisions Major capital expenditures, significant personnel decisions, unusual customer pricing, strategic decisions, and material contractual commitments will remain with the President. The objective is for the Operations Manager to run the daily operation without requiring constant involvement from the President , while maintaining good communication and escalating significant issues appropriately. Qualifications Preferred Experience 5+ years of waste hauling operations, transportation, logistics, construction services, or related experience. Previous experience directly managing drivers or field employees. Dispatching and route-management experience strongly preferred. Waste hauling experience, particularly roll-off and/or front-load operations, strongly preferred. Experience managing a fleet of commercial vehicles. Familiarity with DOT compliance and commercial vehicle safety requirements. Experience working in a smaller, entrepreneurial, or rapidly growing organization is highly desirable. Skills & Characteristics The successful candidate should be: Highly accountable and dependable. Comfortable making decisions independently. Organized and capable of managing many moving pieces simultaneously. Calm and resourceful when unexpected problems arise. Strong with drivers and capable of earning their respect while maintaining accountability. Customer-focused and professional. Mechanically knowledgeable enough to understand truck and equipment issues. Commercially minded and aware of the financial impact of operational decisions. Comfortable using dispatching, fleet-management, CRM, and other business software. Willing to be hands-on rather than managing exclusively from an office. Able to communicate effectively with drivers, customers, vendors, salespeople, mechanics, and company leadership. What Success Looks Like A successful Operations Manager will create an operation where: Trucks leave on time each morning. Drivers understand exactly what is expected of them. Customers receive reliable service. Missed services and operational mistakes are uncommon, but communicated to customers when appropriate and management when they occur. Trucks receive preventative maintenance before problems become breakdowns. Downtime is minimized. Driver overtime and unnecessary miles are controlled. Safety expectations are consistently enforced. Customer problems are resolved without requiring regular involvement from the President. The salesperson can confidently sell new business knowing the operations team can execute. The President has clear visibility into the operation without needing to manage it personally. The operation can grow from 5-10 trucks into a substantially larger fleet without needing to rebuild its operating processes from scratch. Role Evolution During the company's startup phase, this will be a broad, hands-on position. As Waste Advantage Colorado grows, certain responsibilities—including dispatching, fleet management, customer service, and driver supervision—may eventually be delegated to additional team members. The Operations Manager should be capable not only of performing these responsibilities personally today, but also of building and managing the team that will perform them as the company scales.
