Operations Manager Confidential Troy, MI Job Details Full-time $69,128.24 - $75,063.03 a year 1 hour ago Benefits Health insurance Dental insurance Paid time off Vision insurance Qualifications Mechanical blueprint interpretation Manufacturing management Blueprint specification interpretation Interpersonal skills Mechanical fabrication Customer order taking Managing production or assembly teams Dispatching Manufacturing facility experience Sales quoting Production planning Steel Welding Logistics order management Business operations Crew management Full Job Description Operations Manager — Job Description Troy, Michigan The role The Operations Manager turns won orders into work on the floor. You read the customer's prints, decide what needs to be cut, bought and built, get the material ordered and the jobs released, and keep work moving from saw to shipping. This is a hands-on role in a custom steel fabrication shop, working directly with the owner. It suits someone with shop management experience who wants to own the floor, the way a foreman does. Where it can lead. The owner's goal is to step back from day-to-day operations over time. For the right person, this role is the path to general manager: learn the whole business, take more of it off the owner's plate each year, and grow into running it. What you'll do Read prints and plan the work. Review customer drawings for every won order and translate them into what has to be fabricated: parts, cuts, material and the sequence through the shop. Release work to the floor. Dispatch won orders promptly, print travelers, and make sure each job reaches the right station with what it needs. Program the burn table. Convert flat parts into cutting shapes for the CNC burn table and nest them for the best use of plate. Buy material. Build material lists from prints and travelers, get competitive quotes from suppliers, place orders, and follow up so steel arrives when the floor needs it. Keep work moving. Track jobs from saw and burn through fit, weld and shipping. Spot bottlenecks early, solve problems, and tell the owner what's stuck and why. Work with customers and vendors. Be a go-to contact for customers on schedules, changes and drawing questions, and build strong relationships with suppliers on price, quality and delivery. Know what things cost. Use your fabrication sense to check that a job is priced right and to help with quoting. Use the shop's systems. Work in the company's quoting and shop-floor software, keep job status current, and help the crew scan their work. What you bring Required Experience managing a fabrication or machine shop floor, as a foreman, shop supervisor, production manager or similar. Strong blueprint reading for structural and custom steel fabrication, including weld symbols and tolerances.
Hands-on fabrication background:
cutting, fitting and welding steel.
Experience buying material:
quoting suppliers, placing orders and managing delivery dates. Comfortable with computers and shop software. Preferred CNC plasma or oxy-fuel burn table programming and part nesting. Estimating or quoting fabricated work. Experience with an ERP or job-tracking system. Who thrives here We're looking for someone who treats the shop like their own, not someone looking for a job to clock in and out of. Takes ownership. Late material, a stuck job or a quote that looks wrong becomes your problem to solve, and you say so early. Moves with urgency. Orders go to the floor fast, and customers get their parts when promised. Wants to build something. The shop is growing and investing in its own software. You'll help shape how we work, not just keep up with it. Leads by example on the floor. The crew trusts your judgment because you know the work. About the Company We are a custom steel fabrication shop in Troy, Michigan, building parts and weldments for tooling and automation customers. The owner still works on the floor every day, and the shop runs on its own quoting and shop-floor software.
