YMCA EIGHT WEEKS. REAL EXPERIENCE. MEANINGFUL GROWTH.
We believe the best way to develop great youth development professionals is to give them opportunities to learn, practice, and improve. Our Group Assistant internship is designed to do exactly that. Over eight weeks, you'll become an active part of our afterschool program team, working alongside experienced Group Leaders and Site Leaders to create engaging experiences for students. You'll learn how to supervise groups, support enrichment activities, build positive relationships, and respond to the everyday challenges of working with young people. You'll also rotate between elementary and middle school programs, giving you the opportunity to work with different age groups, understand their developmental needs, and adapt your approach. Throughout the internship, you'll receive coaching and feedback to help you strengthen your skills, build confidence, and gradually take on greater responsibilities. Our goal is to help you move beyond simply assisting activities toward becoming someone who can confidently lead them.
YOUR OPPORTUNITY BEYOND THE INTERNSHIP
We don't believe professional growth should stop after eight weeks. Throughout your internship, we'll evaluate your progress in key areas such as reliability, initiative, student engagement, teamwork, professionalism, and leadership readiness. At the conclusion of your internship, we'll review your performance and discuss potential next steps. Depending on your qualifications, performance, program needs, and available positions, you may be considered for: Promotion into a Group Leader position Employment opportunities during spring break and summer camp Other positions and growth opportunities within the YMCA Advancement and continued employment are not guaranteed, but the experience and skills you develop can help prepare you for future opportunities.
OUR VISION AND MISSION
At the YMCA Expanded Learning Program, we envision a world where every student discovers their purpose and reaches their full potential. We bring this vision to life by elevating youth voices and providing engaging enrichment experiences that promote leadership learning and healthy habits. We believe every student deserves opportunities to explore their interests, develop confidence, build meaningful relationships, and experience success. Does our mission align with yours?
ABOUT THE YMCA EXPANDED LEARNING PROGRAM
The YMCA Expanded Learning Program is part of the YMCA of the East Bay. We partner with schools throughout West Contra Costa and Oakland to provide high-quality afterschool programs that support student learning, development, and well-being. Our programs are built around three essential pillars:
Physical Play:
Helping students stay active, develop healthy habits, practice teamwork, and build confidence through movement.
Academic Achievement:
Supporting learning, strengthening academic skills, and encouraging positive habits that contribute to student success.
Creative Curiosity:
Inspiring students to explore new interests, express themselves, think creatively, and discover new possibilities. Together, these experiences create opportunities for young people to develop academically, socially, physically, and emotionally.
OUR MISSION STARTS WITH STRONG TEAM MEMBERS
Great afterschool programs begin with great people. We're looking for individuals who believe in the potential of young people and want to play an active role in helping them succeed. As a Group Assistant, you'll work alongside Group Leaders and Site Leaders to create a positive, engaging, and supportive environment where students can learn, explore, and thrive. Our strongest team members are dependable, take initiative, embrace feedback, and continuously look for ways to improve. They understand that making an impact isn't just about leading an activity. It's about building relationships, creating positive experiences, and being someone students and teammates can count on. You don't need to know everything when you start. You do need to be ready to learn, contribute, and grow.
YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES

Participate in coaching, training, and feedback opportunities to strengthen your skills and performance.
Additional Responsibilities:
Support special events, school-site activities, and other assigned program tasks.
WHAT MAKES A GREAT GROUP ASSISTANT?
We're looking for potential, not perfection. While previous experience working with children is valuable, we place just as much importance on your attitude, work ethic, and willingness to grow.

Dependability:
You show up prepared, arrive on time, and follow through on your commitments.

You remain flexible and respond positively to changing situations and student needs.
