All candidates must be eligible to work and live in the U.S Department University Writing Center - 202700 Primary Purpose of Position The University Writing Center (UWC) is a free resource available to all Appalachian State University students and faculty, as well as members of the Boone community. Our consultants are experienced writers and attentive readers who provide support at any stage of the writing process and across all subject areas. The UWC offers a collaborative, supportive, and non-evaluative environment designed to help writers strengthen their skills while fostering confidence and competence. The University Program Associate manages day-to-day functions, maintains business accounts and records, coordinates and supervises administrative support for the University Writing Center and Writing Across the Curriculum program. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions. License/Certification Required Essential Job Functions Planning, organizing, and supervising work operations for the programs. Communicating with clients about writing services and policies. Maintaining business accounts and records. Planning and monitoring the use of budget expenditures to meet the needs of the program and ensure compliance with policies. Preparing regular budget documents and reports. Training and supporting employees on procedures and policies. Establishing work operations for administrative support and monitoring the quality of the work through regular performance reviews of staff. Supporting communication and resolving issues among program staff, students, and/or other stakeholders. Taking action in personnel matters, including selecting and reviewing staff. Resolving employee problems and grievances. Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Required for this Position Individuals at this level administer, oversee, and manage technical processing functions of the program as well as serve as the process and program expert. University Program Associates serve as the main program contact, plan and manage events, and problem-solve process and procedural issues.

Knowledge - Program & Organization Uses extensive knowledge of the University Writing programs (UWC & WAC) and the university to identify, understand, and communicate policy interpretations and issues. Analyzes and explains policy changes and new procedures that affect the program. Drafts and recommends new procedures as needed. Identifies and provides possible resolutions for unique issues that impact services. Explains and contextualizes the program's mission, services, and policies to multiple audiences. Communication Utilizes extensive written and oral communication skills in the exercising of duties: writes many documents in various professional genres for both internal and external audiences; speaks to students, faculty, staff, and others about writing center services and policies. Advises and consults with clients to ensure accuracy of the communication and understanding of the message. Contextualizes messages within the missions and policies of WAC and the UWC. Uses extensive interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with writing center and WAC staff about policies, procedures, and other work matters. Program Administration Establishes expectations and clear directions for all front desk operations of the University Writing Center and all administrative operations of the UWC and WAC. Makes decisions regarding expectations and ensures program outcomes and deadlines are met. Identifies, understands, and solves complex problems. Adjusts program priorities based on changing work environment or deadlines. Monitors, analyzes, and evaluates work processes for program effectiveness and efficiency. Identifies trends in program operations or activities and makes recommendations. Plans and monitors use of budget expenditures to meet the program's objectives; prepares budget documents and reports as needed. Tracks all personnel, travel, and office expenditures. Makes recommendations to director regarding the use and distributions of funds. Completes and submits all paperwork for budget expenditures, such as travel authorization, purchase requisitions, and reimbursement forms. Balances and reconciles budget monthly in Banner. Customer Service Develops and maintains productive and collaborative work relationships in order to serve clients effectively. Responds promptly and accurately to questions from clients. Knows the value of the program's services for clients and how best to deliver those services. Aligns service delivery with program goals and clients' needs. Identifies unique needs of clients and provides responsive services tailored to their needs. Maintains high quality service standards and makes recommendations for improvement as needed. Information/Records Administration Accesses, reviews, compiles, and stores multiple sources of data and information for the University Writing Center and Writing Across the Curriculum. Researches, explains, and presents data; understands and clarifies rationales for data management policies. Manages, stores, and disposes of all documents in compliance with university policies. Develops and recommends new approaches to improve records and information management. Evaluates and recommends changes to data collection and management in response to complex requests. Maintains awareness of technologies and tools that could improve data management with other business systems. Leading Work Teams Trains and supervises writing center employees in writing center policies and procedures. Selects, trains, schedules, and reviews all front desk and administrative assistants.

Oversees projects for developing publicity materials and staff development resources. Plans work operations for individuals and teams; establishes priorities and sets deadlines within established goals and objectives. Modifies or changes work assignments, workflow, or procedures to ensure effective performance of all duties and responsibilities based on changing needs. Determines need for and develops formal and on-the-job training programs related to work operations, particularly those involving scheduling, data collection and management, and reporting. Counsels employees concerning performance and personal conduct, develops corrective action plans when appropriate, and participates with management in determining and implementing appropriate action. Recommends resolution of disciplinary/grievance issues. Monitors, reviews, and evaluates the work of office staff. Evaluates accomplishments of individuals and teams in relation to the program's mission and goals. Type of Position Permanent Full-Time Staff/Non-Faculty Staff/Non-Faculty Appointment Type 1.0 Work Schedule/Hours Mon-Fri 8-5, with occasional evenings and weekend hours.
