Part-time Compensation:

$30.00 per hour plus a percentage of lesson and clinic fees, as specified in the approved compensation arrangement. Position Overview The New York Athletic Club is seeking a part-time Rowing Program Manager to develop and deliver rowing instruction and programming for members. Programs include Learn-to-Row, private and small-group lessons, recreational and masters rowing, indoor ergometer training, and approved youth programming. This role combines hands-on coaching with program development, member recruitment, and community building. The manager will build an active base of participants, help members develop their rowing skills, and provide safe, enjoyable, and well-organized instruction. The manager oversees safe participation during scheduled programming and the care of NYAC rowing boats and related equipment. General facility management is assigned to separate NYAC managers. This position identifies and reports facility needs rather than managing cleaning, building maintenance, towel service, or general facility staffing. Coaching and Instruction Lead Learn-to-Row programs for adults and approved youth participants. Deliver private lessons, small-group instruction, clinics, and indoor rowing classes appropriate to participants' abilities and goals. Teach rowing technique, fitness development, safe boat handling, and proper use of rowing equipment on the water and on ergometers. Develop structured lesson plans and seasonal programming that support skill progression, continued participation, and member enjoyment. Provide individualized feedback and help members establish appropriate training goals. Guide assistant coaches when assigned to approved programming. Program Development and Member Engagement Develop and grow Learn-to-Row, recreational and masters rowing, private instruction, indoor training, and approved youth programs. Recruit participants through member outreach, introductory opportunities, and coordination with NYAC communications and management. Build relationships with new and returning participants, encourage repeat participation, and develop a welcoming rowing community. Schedule lessons and clinics around participant registrations, demand, equipment availability, and safe operating conditions. Communicate program offerings, registration details, schedule changes, cancellations, and rowing rules to participants. Gather member feedback and recommend improvements to program content and delivery. Rowing Safety and Equipment Care Assess weather, water conditions, participant ability, and equipment readiness before on-water sessions; modify, postpone, or cancel activities when conditions are unsafe. Oversee safety during scheduled instruction and programming, including appropriate supervision and safe launching and landing. Teach and reinforce NYAC rowing rules and safe-use expectations for members using rowing equipment; address or report observed unsafe practices. Monitor the condition of NYAC shells, oars, ergometers, coxing equipment, and coaching launches. Perform routine equipment care, basic rigging adjustments, and minor maintenance within the scope of training and NYAC authorization. Remove unsafe equipment from use and report damage or significant repair needs to management for approval and qualified service. Maintain basic NYAC rowing equipment inventory, inspection, and maintenance records. Promptly report incidents, injuries, and safety concerns through NYAC procedures. Program Administration and Coordination Maintain lesson schedules, participant registrations, attendance records, and program calendars. Submit accurate records of hours worked and lessons or clinics delivered to support billing and compensation. Coordinate use of NYAC boats and equipment to avoid conflicts among scheduled programs and other authorized users. Coordinate participation in local masters or novice regattas when approved, including entries and program related equipment logistics. Follow applicable NYAC policies and adopted USRowing safety standards. Report facility cleaning, building maintenance, towel service, and access issues to the Field House Manager or other responsible manager. Communicate program needs and facility concerns to the Director of Athletics. Schedule and Scope of Responsibility Work hours are scheduled primarily around registered lessons, clinics, and approved programming, with additional scheduled time for planning, participant communication, and equipment care. The schedule may include early mornings, evenings, and weekends, depending on member demand, season, and weather. The role does not require continuous boathouse coverage or supervision of all facility users outside scheduled programming. Separate NYAC managers own facility staffing, cleaning schedules, towel service, building maintenance, and access administration. The Rowing Program Manager reports needs and coordinates program requirements with those managers. Qualifications Prior competitive rowing experience and strong technical knowledge of rowing fundamentals. USRowing Level 2 Coaching Certification or higher. Experience coaching novice and intermediate rowers, including adults and youth. Strong teaching, interpersonal, and member-service skills. Current CPR, AED, and First Aid certifications. Boating safety certification appropriate to assigned coaching-launch duties and NYAC requirements. Ability to operate coaching launches safely and perform routine equipment care and basic rigging adjustments. Strong organizational skills and the ability to independently develop programming and build member participation. Performance Expectations Grow program participation and encourage repeat lesson and clinic bookings. Deliver effective instruction and a positive member experience. Maintain clear participant communication and accurate program records. Provide safe programming and keep NYAC rowing equipment ready for use through routine care and timely reporting of repair needs.
