Position Summary :

Knik Tribe is seeking a Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) Biologist (Project Coordinator) for full-time employment to support HAB monitoring and research with Knik Tribe's Environmental Department. The primary focus for this position will be to work with the Knik Tribe Chief Scientist and partners to collect environmental and HAB monitoring samples, manage the data, and outreach to clients, mostly HABs researchers and subsistence marine resource users. The resulting data will be used to assess the potential impact of HABs and their toxins on coastal ecosystems and to enlighten users of risks from HABs in Alaska. Primary Duties and Responsibilities (including but not limited to): The successful candidate will:

• Be organized and detail-oriented, maintain accurate records and documentation, and work effectively both independently and collaboratively with co-workers, community members, project partners, and government agencies in office, laboratory, and field settings.
• Coordinate day-to-day project activities under the direction of the Chief Scientist, including field sampling, sample processing, data collection, reporting, and project administration.
• Coordinate the collection, processing, packaging, and shipment of field samples to the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation Environmental Health Laboratory (EHL) for analysis.
• Coordinate with community members, Knik Tribe field technicians, project partners, and government agency staff to obtain PSP samples and ensure samples are properly collected, processed, and delivered to the EHL.
• Supervise and coordinate the work of approximately 5-6 Knik Tribe field technicians responsible for weekly sample collection.
• Travel to field locations and collaborate with project partners to collect and process environmental samples and monitoring data. Fieldwork may require working irregular hours and under adverse weather and sea conditions.
• Coordinate logistics for field sampling activities, including travel, lodging, transportation, equipment, supplies, and other project needs.
• Coordinate and make arrangements for the annual summer field sampling expedition to Sand Point and Popoff Island, including travel, lodging, transportation, supplies, equipment, and field schedules.
• Follow established protocols for the collection and processing of plankton, fish, invertebrates, and/or other biological samples for toxin analysis.
• Manage project-related shipping and laboratory analysis invoices and maintain accurate financial documentation.
• Collect, organize, and analyze field and laboratory data; maintain project metadata; and prepare data for graphical and statistical analysis.
• Incorporate project results into tables, figures, maps, reports, publications, presentations, and other materials as needed.
• Prepare semiannual technical reports and quarterly financial reports in accordance with project requirements.
• Prepare and maintain research findings and project information for publication on the Knik Tribe Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) website.
• Assist the Chief Scientist with energy projects and other research-related activities.
• Assist other Project Coordinators with field exercises, data collection, and other project activities as needed.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements:

• B.S. Degree with three (3) years of relevant field and lab experience in environmental science, ecology, biological oceanography, marine science, or related sciences.
• Experience with basic laboratory and field procedures in biological analysis and safety.
• Ability to troubleshoot field collection protocols and develop new procedures to meet evolving project goals.
• Employment is contingent on satisfactory reports from state and federal background check.
• Valid Alaska driver's license and be insurable under Knik Tribe's automotive insurance, which requires the driver to be at least 21 years of age.
• Current First Aid and CPR.
