Job Description

Position Overview The Public Works Employee for the City of Ellsworth plays an essential role in maintaining the city's infrastructure, facilities, utilities, and public spaces. This position supports the day-to-day operations of the Public Works Department, ensures reliable delivery of municipal services, and contributes to the safety, cleanliness, and overall functionality of the community. While this role begins as a Public Works Employee, candidates who demonstrate strong leadership qualities, extensive municipal work experience, and who hold (or obtain) required water and wastewater certifications may be eligible for future advancement to a supervisory role. Key Responsibilities Assist in maintaining city streets, sidewalks, rights-of-way, parks, and public grounds Perform seasonal operations, including mowing, snow removal, salting, and debris cleanup Monitor, test, and maintain water and wastewater systems under the guidance of certified staff or city engineers Operate and maintain city equipment, vehicles, and tools in a safe and efficient manner Help develop and follow routine maintenance schedules for city buildings, utilities, and infrastructure Respond to resident inquiries regarding service issues, outages, and public works concerns Support public works staff with infrastructure repairs involving water, sewer, electrical, and gas utilities Participate in city improvement initiatives and long-term infrastructure planning Maintain accurate records and assist with documentation required by regulatory agencies Represent the City of Ellsworth professionally when interacting with the public, contractors, and officials Follow all applicable federal, state, and local regulations related to public works and municipal operations Uphold workplace safety standards and contribute to a positive and respectful team environment Preferred Qualifications Prior municipal experience involving infrastructure maintenance, utilities, or public works operations Experience operating heavy machinery, utility equipment, or specialized tools Leadership experience, including project guidance or team coordination Strong communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills Grade A Water, Grade I Wastewater, and Grade II Wastewater Operator Certifications (Preference will be given to candidates who possess these certifications, as they align with progression into a supervisory role. Candidates without certifications may be allowed time to obtain them.) Electrical/lineman training, mechanical aptitude, or advanced infrastructure experience is beneficial Advancement Opportunity This position has clear potential for promotion into a Public Works Supervisor role. Advancement consideration will be based on: Demonstrated leadership abilities Reliability, accountability, and initiative Municipal operations experience and technical skill development Successful completion of water/wastewater certifications Strong communication and public service ethics Compensation Salary range: $50,000-$75,000 annually, based on experience, qualifications, and certifications. Benefits This is a full-time, IPERS-qualified position.
