The United City of Yorkville is seeking an experienced Assistant Public Works Director to oversee the day-to-day operations of our Public Works Department. This role will manage key areas including streets, water, sanitary sewer, storm water, and public buildings. The Assistant Director will provide supervisory leadership, make independent decisions, and assist in various administrative tasks like budgeting, planning, and purchasing. Will be expected to provide supervisory guidance and oversight of projects in emergency situations and outdoors in all types of weather conditions. In the absence of the Public Works Director, the Assistant Director will lead the department. Key Responsibilities
Supervise and manage daily operations of the Public Works Department (Streets, Water, Sanitary Sewer, Storm Sewer, and Facilities Management).
Assist in the preparation of the department's annual budget.
Conduct analyses, prepare management reports, and make recommendations to City Council and the City Administrator.
Review budget line items to ensure expenditures align with the established budget.
Participate in personnel management, including employee selection, performance evaluation, and addressing complaints.
Respond to public inquiries and complaints, making independent recommendations for resolution. Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or a related field (preferred).
Minimum of 5 years of municipal experience, including supervisory responsibilities.
Thorough knowledge of public works principles, maintenance, and utility management.
Cross-functional experience in Finance and Human Resources is a plus.
Strong leadership and problem-solving skills with a demonstrated ability to manage people and projects.
Must pass a drug test and background check. Preferred Skills
Experience with budgeting, planning, and managing public works projects.
Ability to address emergency situations and work outdoors in various weather conditions.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with staff, the public, and other city departments.
