Salary is commensurate with education and experience The Dean of Public Safety provides academic, administrative, and fiscal leadership for the College's Public Safety programs in Curriculum and Workforce Continuing Education, including Law Enforcement, Fire Services, Emergency Medical Services (EMS), and Criminal Justice Technology. The Dean ensures high-quality instruction aligned with workforce needs, regulatory requirements, accreditation standards, and student success outcomes. This position also serves as the Director of EMS of record, acting as the primary liaison with the NC Office of Emergency Medical Services (NCOEMS), while ensuring full compliance with the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).
Duties include:
Provide strategic leadership, planning, and operational oversight for all Public Safety instructional programs.
Administer the EMS program in full compliance with the NC Office of Emergency Medical Services, while ensuring full compliance with Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) including scheduling, student admissions, instructor credentialing, documentation, reporting, and audits.
Recruit, supervise, mentor, and evaluate full-time and adjunct faculty and staff in all Curriculum and Workforce Continuing Education programs in the Public Safety Division.
Oversee curriculum development, instructional delivery, facilities, equipment, and training resources to ensure industry relevance and instructional quality.
Manage program budgets, grants, and funding sources (including Perkins and other applicable grants) and ensure fiscal accountability.
Ensure compliance with accreditation, licensure, and regulatory requirements across all Public Safety programs.
Develop and maintain strong partnerships with law enforcement agencies, fire departments, EMS providers, criminal justice agencies, employers, workforce boards, and community stakeholders.
Support student recruitment, retention, credential attainment, licensure success, and workforce readiness.
Participate in college-wide planning, committees, and initiatives in support of institutional goals.
Serve on College committees and task forces as assigned.
Attend required campus events, including graduation, professional development, & employee meetings.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
EDUCATION
Bachelor's degree in emergency medical care, health education, or a healthcare-related field from a regionally accredited institution.
KNOWLEDGE and SKILLS:
Minimum of five (5) years of progressive leadership or supervisory experience in law enforcement, public safety, or workforce training. Demonstrated knowledge of accreditation standards for
EMS CAAHEP.
Eligible for approval by the NC OEMS as an EMS Director.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience working within the North Carolina Community College System, particularly in Public Safety or Workforce Continuing Education. Prior experience as an EMS Director or lead EMS instructor. Experience with accreditation, program review, grant management, and workforce development partnerships.
LICENSING REQUIREMENT
NC Certified Paramedic certification, current credentialed Level II Paramedic Instructor Preferred Qualifications AHA, BLS, ACLS, and PALS Credential; PHTLS or ITLS Instructor Credential; AMLS Instructor Credential. Work is carried out in a standard heated and air-conditioned area. There will be frequent interruptions from both students and the public. Some evening work may be required. Faculty receive paid breaks throughout the academic year, including a Spring Break, Fall Break, and holiday break in December 12-month employees work 1,976 hours per year, which allows for an adjusted summer schedule of 4-day work weeks.
