THE CAMP
Camp Onaway is a seven-week, residential summer camp for 90 girls aged 9 - 15 with 45 staff, located on 40 woodland acres on the shores of Newfound Lake in Hebron, New Hampshire, one of the cleanest lakes in the country. Founded in 1911, Onaway is a small, non profit educational institution dedicated to creating opportunities for each camper to realize their full potential. An emphasis on personal growth and development is reflected in the mission statement: Camp Onaway provides girls the time, space, and guidance to develop the physical and spiritual strengths necessary to meet the challenges of today's world with honesty, sensitivity, and courage.
POSITION OVERVIEW
The Assistant Director (AD) is charged with supporting the summer camp community and program and is an ambassador of Onaway and our mission. The AD assists the Director in recruiting new families and communicates with families through the year. In season, the AD works with the Program Director, Aide (C.I.T) counselors, and Director on staff training, including oversight of the precamp training program. The AD also partners with residential counselors on camper adjustment, and with the Program Director and activity counselors to maintain a high standard of excellence in camp's day-to-day activities. The AD supports the Director of Administration and Operations to monitor, update, and implement safety policies based on the community needs and in line with both the ACA standards and the
NH DHHS. WORK LOCATION
The Assistant Director is a hybrid position with a requirement to work in New Hampshire, at a minimum, for ten weeks of the summer season and six day work week (pre-camp training, seven-week camp session, post camp and final events). The AD may work remotely on a day to day basis for the remainder of the year with travel expectations to camp three times annually for onsite events and to ensure strong collaboration with the year round team. The AD also travels for select Open Houses for the recruitment of campers and staff, and other off season events. There is a preference for off-season work location in New England.
SCOPE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Staffing Lead, with the Director's support, the hiring of program staff (counselors and aides). Lead the staff mentoring program and enhance when new needs are identified. Plan and implement robust Orientation (pre-camp) training for council and aides withsupport from the director and other leadership staff. Address council / aides needs, includingnadditional training, throughout summer. Support the Director in hiring non-program staff when needed. Evaluate the Aides program, including researching best practices with the ACA & peer camps. Communicate with staff on the details of their leadership positions (head of waterfront, scheduler, play directors, etc) in advance of camp season. Propose staff cabin group assignments in conjunction with the director and work with Aides counselors to assign aides to groups. Analyze staff end-of-season surveys and propose changes for the following summer. Write letters of recommendation when requested and assist counselors in connecting with alumnae and families for networking purposes. Families and Campers With the Director, support with recruitment efforts of new campers and families. With the Director, analyze and develop opportunities for family engagement, including new family gatherings (virtual or in person). Plan and attend new family zoom meetings with the director in the spring. Oversee and enhance the Big Sister program, pairing all new campers with returning campers. Analyze parent and camper end-of-season surveys and propose changes for following summers. Support the Director in off-season conversations and communications with new families. Communicate with parents/guardians to ensure smooth transitions for campers from home to camp. Read all forms and, with director and nurse, identify campers/families that need additional evaluation for readiness to attend camp. Additional In Season Camp Program Duties With the Director, oversee the camp program and serve as Acting Director when the Director is off campus. Lead weekly Sunday council meetings supporting the schedule and camper concerns. Lead daily staff meetings with the Program Director and Scheduler. Implement, with support from the Director, all planned Family Communications (new camper family calls, midsummer, and final camper reports) Conduct midsummer check-ins with half of the council. Provide counsel to staff and campers, handling smaller issues independently and with good judgement. Work with the Director on more significant issues as they arise. Ensure Program Director supported in management of two family visiting weekends with the support of leadership staff. Support communication and collaboration with Maintenance, Kitchen, and Health Center. Other Trip Program - secure reservations in advance of the season for cabin group overnights and Trip Week (4th week of camp). Trustee Weekends - prepare for and attend three trustee weekends in Nov (virtual), April (locations around the country) and August (at camp). Attend select events regionally including Open Houses, conferences and alumnae events. Work with Director and DoA to ensure paperwork in order for all trip permits, DHHS license, and ACA accreditation.
EXPERIENCE REQUIRED A
background in education or child development is critical to the position, and a bachelor's degree is required. Candidates should have at least three years of experience working at a summer camp with leadership roles preferred and five years or more in education, outdoor education, or similar-related fields. An understanding of historically all-girls summer camps is essential and experience in the fields of social work or mental health is also preferred. Applicants must be friendly, energetic, possess a good sense of humor and strong work ethic, be organized and adept at written and oral communication, and be an effective leader and role model for the staff and campers.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
Annual salary of $60,000-70,000. Compensation commensurate with experience.
