City of Mequon

Deputy Director of Public Works

Job Description

The City of Mequon is looking for a leader who wants to make a visible, lasting impact on the community. Behind every safe roadway, well-maintained park, reliable piece of equipment, and thriving public facility is a team of people making it happen. The City of Mequon is seeking an experienced, strategic, and people-focused professional to serve as our next Deputy Director of Public Works as our longtime Deputy Director prepares to retire. This is more than a public works management position—it is an opportunity to help shape the future of a community through thoughtful infrastructure planning, strong operational leadership, responsible stewardship of public resources, and a commitment to high-quality service. The Opportunity As a key member of the Public Works leadership team, the Deputy Director provides strategic and operational leadership across the City's highway, buildings, parks, fleet, and forestry operations. You will work alongside the Director of Public Works/City Engineer to manage a large and complex department, develop short- and long-range capital improvement plans, advance strategic initiatives, and ensure the City's infrastructure and public assets are maintained safely, efficiently, and cost-effectively. You will lead through others, working closely with experienced superintendents and staff while building strong relationships across City departments, with elected officials, contractors, consultants, regional partners, and the community. With responsibility for a team of approximately 30 full-time and 25 part-time employees and an annual budget exceeding $3 million, this is a position where your leadership, judgment, and decisions will have a meaningful impact on the City and its residents. What You'll Do Make an Impact You Can See. From roads and parks to public buildings, equipment, and community infrastructure, your work will directly influence the quality of life in Mequon. Think Beyond Today. Help shape the City's future through capital improvement planning, strategic planning, infrastructure investment, performance measurement, and long-term operational planning. Lead a Team That Matters. Guide and support a diverse Public Works workforce and foster a culture of safety, accountability, collaboration, professionalism, and service. Work at the Center of City Operations. Collaborate with City leaders, elected officials, other departments, consultants, contractors, regional partners, and residents to solve problems and move important projects forward. Bring Ideas to the Table. This position calls for someone who can look at challenges from both an operational and strategic perspective and make sound decisions today while keeping an eye on what the community will need tomorrow.
