Farm and Operations Assistant Location:
Edgewood and Veguita, New Mexico, with regular trips to
Albuquerque Schedule:
Flexible, approximately 5-20 hours per week
Compensation:
$40 per hour
Position Type:
Part-time, variable hours Position Overview We are seeking an organized and detail-oriented Farm and Operations Assistant to support agricultural, construction, and administrative activities at sites in Edgewood and Veguita, New Mexico. This is a varied, hands-on position suited to someone who enjoys plant cultivation, outdoor work, practical problem-solving, and taking ownership of diverse projects. Hours will vary according to seasonal and project needs, ranging from approximately 5 to 20 hours per week. After being trained, the successful candidate must be comfortable working independently, following detailed instructions, and shifting between physical fieldwork, errands, construction support, and administrative assignments. Primary Responsibilities Field and Greenhouse Cultivation
  • Assist with cultivating field and greenhouse crops
  • Sow seed, water, weed, hand-pollinate, and monitor plants
  • Prepare planting areas and maintain orderly growing spaces
  • Help identify and address routine cultivation needs
  • Maintain accurate organization of plant and seed materials Seed Processing and Handling
  • Thresh, clean, and treat harvested seed
  • Sort, label, and organize seed envelopes
  • Prepare seed for storage and transportation
  • Transport seed and related materials to Albuquerque
  • Handle seed carefully and follow all provided processing and safety procedures Construction and Site Support
  • Assist with the construction of a greenhouse, shed, and farmhouse
  • Support the establishment of a new field site in Veguita
  • Help prepare land for cultivation and construction
  • Pick up building materials, permits, tools, and equipment
  • Visit suppliers such as Lowe's and other local vendors
  • Help rent, collect, and return equipment as needed
  • Keep work areas, tools, and project materials organized Errands and Administrative Support
  • Run project-related errands between Edgewood, Veguita, and Albuquerque
  • Perform administrative tasks, such as contacting storage facilities in Albuquerque to identify a suitable seed-storage location, gathering pricing, availability, access, and facility-condition information
  • Make phone calls, maintain notes, and report findings
  • Assist with scheduling, supply coordination, recordkeeping, and other desk-based tasks Qualifications
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Dependable, competent, and able to follow instructions carefully
  • Genuine interest in plant cultivation, farming, or greenhouse work
  • Ability to work independently and use sound judgment
  • Comfortable performing a combination of agricultural, construction-support, administrative, and errand-related work
  • Clear and professional communication skills
  • Ability to keep seed, tools, materials, receipts, and project information well organized
  • Ability to travel regularly among Edgewood, Veguita, and Albuquerque
  • Prior experience in farming, gardening, greenhouse cultivation, seed processing, construction, or general maintenance is preferred but not required Physical Requirements This position involves regular physical activity in fields, greenhouses, construction areas, and other outdoor environments. The employee must be able to:
  • Traverse rough and uneven terrain
  • Frequently bend, kneel, and work close to the ground
  • Lift and carry materials weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Perform outdoor work in varying weather conditions
  • Safely use basic hand tools and assist with construction and land-preparation activities
