Heavy Haul Operations Manager

Job Description

Job Summary We are seeking an experienced Heavy Haul Operations Manager to help build and manage a growing commercial transportation operation in San Diego County specializing in heavy equipment hauling and commercial truck recovery . This is a hands-on management position for someone who understands the transportation industry and can take ownership of day-to-day operations while also helping grow the company's customer base. The ideal candidate can coordinate drivers and equipment, communicate directly with customers, quote and schedule jobs, develop new business relationships, and ensure transportation operations are performed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with applicable regulations. This is not a warehouse or general logistics position . Experience in heavy haul, equipment transportation, towing/recovery, construction transportation, lowbed operations, or a closely related field is strongly preferred. Responsibilities Manage day-to-day heavy equipment hauling and commercial recovery operations. Dispatch and coordinate drivers, trucks, trailers, pickups, deliveries, and recovery assignments. Communicate directly with customers regarding scheduling, equipment requirements, pricing, ETAs, and job completion. Review load information including equipment type, weight, dimensions, pickup/delivery conditions, and transportation requirements. Assist with quoting jobs while considering mileage, deadhead, driver time, equipment utilization, permits, fuel, and other operating costs. Identify when oversize/overweight permits, specialized routing, or additional transportation requirements may apply. Maintain strong working knowledge of DOT and California commercial transportation requirements. Monitor driver documentation, inspections, maintenance needs, and operational records. Develop new business through prospecting, cold calling, networking, vendor applications, customer visits, and relationship building. Build and maintain relationships with contractors, equipment rental companies, equipment dealers, construction companies, fleet operators, and other commercial customers. Follow up on prospective accounts and help convert opportunities into recurring business. Maintain organized records of customers, prospects, quotes, jobs, driver assignments, and operational activity. Assist ownership in developing procedures and systems as the company grows. Respond professionally and decisively to scheduling changes, customer issues, driver issues, and other operational problems. Qualifications Prior experience in heavy haul, equipment transportation, towing/recovery, trucking operations, dispatch, or a closely related transportation field . Strong understanding of commercial trucks, trailers, payload/capacity considerations, and heavy equipment transportation. Experience dispatching drivers and coordinating transportation jobs. Ability to communicate professionally with drivers, customers, vendors, and management. Strong sales/business-development ability and willingness to actively pursue new accounts. Ability to quote transportation work and understand basic job profitability. Working knowledge of DOT/FMCSA and California commercial transportation regulations. Strong organizational, problem-solving, and decision-making skills. Comfortable using email, Microsoft Office, spreadsheets, and common business software. Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
Preferred Qualifications:
5+ years of relevant trucking, heavy haul, equipment transportation, towing/recovery, or transportation operations experience. Previous supervisory or operations-management experience. Existing relationships within the Southern California construction, equipment rental, trucking, towing, or heavy-equipment industries. Experience with oversize/overweight permitting and routing. Class A CDL preferred but not required. Experience operating or working directly around heavy-duty commercial vehicles and equipment. Compensation $75,000-$90,000 per year , depending on experience and qualifications. Additional performance-based compensation may be available for new business generated.
