Job Description:
Student Transit, part of the Sodrel family of companies, is seeking an experienced and highly organized Transportation Coordinator to join our Richmond team. Sodrel has been family-owned and operated for more than 100 years, providing the stability of a long-established company with a strong commitment to the communities we serve. The Transportation Coordinator works closely with the Operations Manager to coordinate the day-to-day transportation activities for our Richmond Community Schools operation. This is a hands-on operational role responsible for keeping daily routes covered, coordinating drivers, managing dispatch activities, and responding to changing transportation needs throughout the day. We're looking for someone who understands that transportation doesn't always go according to plan. The right person will be able to stay organized, communicate clearly, solve problems quickly, and keep the operation moving when schedules or circumstances change.
Responsibilities include:
Coordinate daily school bus routes and driver assignments to ensure appropriate coverage Manage morning and afternoon dispatch activities Respond to driver call-offs and other unexpected staffing or route changes and coordinate coverage Maintain and adjust driver schedules and route assignments as operational needs change Use the Transportation Management System (TMS) and other required systems to support daily operations Maintain ongoing communication with drivers regarding routes, assignments, schedule changes, and operational needs Coordinate driver and equipment coverage for field trips, athletics, summer school, and other extracurricular transportation in partnership with the Operations Manager Communicate with Richmond Community Schools personnel regarding routine transportation and service issues Respond professionally to transportation-related calls and concerns from parents/guardians and escalate significant concerns to the Operations Manager as appropriate Coordinate with Maintenance regarding vehicle availability, equipment issues, and bus assignments Communicate accidents, incidents, injuries, safety concerns, and significant operational issues promptly to the Operations Manager and appropriate departments Support compliance with company policies and applicable transportation and safety requirements Assist the Operations Manager with monitoring driver attendance, reliability, and operational performance Assist with interviewing, onboarding, and orientation of new drivers as needed Work closely with the Transportation Assistant to ensure schedules, records, communications, and other operational information remain accurate and current Provide additional operational support to the Operations Manager as needed This position plays a key role in keeping our Richmond school transportation operation running safely, reliably, and efficiently. The ideal candidate is someone who can anticipate needs, make good decisions under pressure, communicate effectively with drivers and customers, and take ownership of the daily transportation operation.. Job Requirements:
Previous transportation, dispatch, school bus, logistics, or similar operations experience preferred Strong organizational, problem-solving, and decision-making skills Ability to coordinate multiple routes, drivers, and changing operational needs Strong verbal and written communication skills Comfortable learning and using Transportation Management Systems (TMS) and other computer-based programs Ability to remain calm and make sound decisions in a fast-paced environment Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work e?ectively with drivers, school personnel, parents/guardians, and coworkers Dependable, professional, and able to work independently School bus or student transportation experience is strongly preferred
