Job Summary A Steel Yard Supervisor manages daily yard operations, inventory, and logistics for structural steel, plate, pipe, or scrap metals. They bridge the gap between office scheduling, shop fabrication, and yard crews to keep material flowing safely and efficiently. Core Responsibilities Crew & Safety Management Direct yard workers, crane operators, and forklift drivers. Enforce OSHA standards, rigging safety, and PPE compliance across all material-handling activities. Inventory Control & Receiving Supervise the offloading, inspection, and staging of incoming steel shipments. Track heat numbers, material test reports (MTRs), and stock levels against purchase orders. Logistics & Staging Coordinate material staging for CNC/plasma processing, fabrication shops, or outbound shipping trucks. Manage loading schedules to minimize driver wait times and maximize trailer payloads. Equipment Maintenance Oversee routine inspection and preventive maintenance for yard cranes, forklifts, side-loaders, and rigging hardware, including slings, chains, and spreader bars. Process Optimization Organize yard layouts by profile, length, and grade to improve pick speed. Minimize double-handling and protect material from damage or corrosion. Key Qualifications & Requirements Experience 3-5+ years of experience in steel service centers, structural fabrication yards, or heavy industrial logistics. Prior supervisory experience required. Technical Knowledge Deep understanding of steel shapes, including W-beams, channels, tube, and plate. Knowledge of steel grades and rigging/lifting capacities. Equipment Certification Proficient, and often certified, in operating overhead/gantry cranes, heavy-capacity forklifts, and mobile equipment. Software Skills Familiarity with ERP and inventory systems such as FabSuite/Tekla PowerFab, STRUMIS, and SAP. Experience with digital nesting or cut-list software is preferred. Key Performance Metrics (KPIs) Safety Record Zero preventable lifting/loading incidents or recordable injuries. Inventory Accuracy Maintain a precise match between physical stock and digital inventory counts. Minimize misplaced drops and heat-number mix-ups. Turnaround Time Maintain fast and efficient loading/unloading rates for incoming flatbeds and outgoing fabrication feeds. Oversee inventory management systems and conduct regular inventory audits using RF scanners and warehouse management software such as AS400 or similar systems. Coordinate logistics for inbound and outbound shipments, collaborating with 3PL providers and transportation partners. Implement process improvements utilizing lean management principles to optimize warehouse workflows and reduce waste. Operate or oversee the operation of material handling equipment such as forklifts, ensuring safety protocols are followed under OSHA guidelines. Maintain accurate records of inventory levels, shipping/receiving logs, and incident reports to support warehouse operations. Experience Proven experience as a Warehouse Supervisor or in a similar warehouse management role within a distribution center environment. Strong background in warehouse operations, inventory control, and materials handling techniques. Familiarity with warehouse management systems (WMS), inventory management systems, and RF scanners. Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to manage teams effectively and communicate clearly with staff at all levels. Mechanical knowledge related to material handling equipment operation is highly desirable. Experience with heavy lifting, OSHA safety standards, e-commerce logistics, and 3PL distribution is preferred. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications such as Excel and Word; experience with AS400 or equivalent systems is a plus.
