Collection System Maintenance Operator Grade I

Job Description

Under the direction of the Chief Waste Water Treatment Plant Operator-Collections, perform a variety of duties involved in the maintenance and repair of City sewer systems, lines and equipment. Perform a variety of duties involved in the maintenance and repair of City sewer systems, lines and equipment; maintain proper and uninterrupted sewage flow from homes, offices and industrial buildings to the waste water treatment plant. Inspect, clean, flush, unplug and remove obstructions from sewer lines; clean, maintain and service storm drains and pump stations; repair or replace valves, control devices, pipes, fittings and various other fixtures, parts and equipment. Respond to customer service calls and public complaints concerning sewer lines; investigate public complaints; respond to basic customer inquiries regarding sewer maintenance services. Operate utility trucks and sewer rodding equipment; utilize a variety of heavy and light equipment including backhoes, dump trucks, tractors, water trucks, asphalt cutting machines, compactors, pressure washers and hand and power tools. Drive dump trucks and other vehicles to haul and transport equipment, supplies and materials to and from project locations. Maintain various records and logs related to maintenance, storm drain conditions, manholes, collection systems and assigned activities. Maintain plant and other assigned areas in a safe, clean and orderly condition. Inspect, clean and reconstruct manhole covers as assigned. Perform emergency maintenance work and assist other maintenance crews as assigned.
OTHER DUTIES
Perform related duties as assigned. Plumbing mechanics and sewer rodding, vacuuming and cleaning techniques. Safe application of pesticides and cleaning solutions. Standard tools, equipment, materials, methods and techniques used in general construction, maintenance and repair. Practices, procedures, methods and materials involved in the installation, cleaning, maintenance and repair of sewer lines, systems and equipment. Oral and written communication skills. Health and safety regulations and procedures. Operation of hand and power tools and equipment. Proper lifting techniques. Basic record-keeping techniques.
ABILITY TO
Perform a variety of duties involved in the maintenance and repair of City water and sewer systems, lines and equipment. Inspect, clean, flush, unplug and remove obstructions from sewer lines; clean, maintain and service storm drains and pump stations. Operate a variety of heavy and light equipment including backhoes, dump trucks, tractors, water trucks, asphalt cutting machines, compactors, pressure washers and hand and power tools. Observe health and safety regulations. Perform heavy physical labor. Understand and follow oral and written instruction. Observe legal and defensive driving practices. Work cooperatively with others. Prepare and compile routine records related to work performed.
Any combination equivalent to:
graduation from high school and two years maintenance experience including work with sewer maintenance.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Collection System Maintenance Grade I certification. Valid California Class B driver's license with air brake and tanker endorsements.
