WATER SYSTEM WORKER I

Under general supervision, to perform maintenance, operations and repair work on the City's water distribution system; including pumps, mains, chlorinators, meters and other equipment; and complete related work as required.

Distinguishing Characteristics:

The Water System Worker I is the entry-level class in the Water System Worker Series that allows the incumbent to develop journey level knowledge and abilities. Initially, under immediate supervision, incumbents perform more routine and less complex assignments within an established procedural framework where there are minimal consequences of error, including meter reading and customer service work. Incumbents are expected to perform the full scope of assigned duties. This classification may progress to a Water System II with Department Head approval after gaining experience, possessing any specialized training and/or licensing and demonstrating a level of proficiency that meets the qualifications of the higher-level classification.

Essential Functions:

Performs meter reading, inspection, maintenance and customer service-oriented work related to the water distribution system; performs underground water system maintenance work. Read meters, records readings; re-read meters as necessary; either manually or by radio-read equipment; investigates unusual readings and customer complaints regarding taste and odor, pressure and related problems; resolves problems or prepares work orders for follow up. Inspects meters and lines for damage or leaks; install and exchanges water meters; repairs minor leaks; replaces meter lids; reports inoperative or damaged meters, bypassed meters and related problems; clears or reports meters obstructed by landscaping. Install water service lines, meters and related appurtenances; perform varied facility maintenance work as required; perform a variety of heavy physical work in the installation, maintenance and repair of water distribution and other underground lines. Disconnects and reconnects water services; prepares incident reports: May participate in organizational and community group meetings; address and respond to service questions, inquiries and complaints; provides information to customer or refers to others as appropriate; maintains good public relations; notifies customer as required. Operates city vehicles; inspects and fuels vehicles and performs minor maintenance; orders parts and supplies. Completes under locating requests (811) Observes safe work methods and safety precautions. Establishes and maintains positive working relationships with representatives of community organizations, state/local agencies, City management and staff, and the public. Required to respond to after-hours emergency conditions and/or participate in assigned standby duties.

WATER SYSTEM WORKER II

Distinguishing Characteristics:

This is the second level in the Water System Worker class series. Incumbents perform a variety of maintenance, operations, and repair work on the city's water distribution system. This class is distinguished from the Water System Worker III in that Water System Worker III class assignments are performed with substantially less supervision and guidance. It is distinguished from Water System Worker I by performing more work that is complex and requires a higher level of certification. There is considerable similarity in assignments between Water System Worker I and II, with the skill and knowledge differences based on the certification level required of incumbents.

Essential Functions:

Maintain, clean, disinfect, and perform general repairs to wells, and pumping station facilities as required. Routinely maintain, clean, wash disinfect and perform general repairs to sampling stations. Monitor, adjust, calibrate, and repair disinfection equipment as required. Flush dead end mains, inspect, and maintain fire hydrants. Collect water quality samples, as required. Install, cut, fit, lay, repair water mains, clean, flush, and disinfect water mains and appurtenances. Inspect, test, operate and maintain valves and related water distribution equipment, as needed. Locate and verify underground utilities and determine if utilities are in conflict with the water system. Contact and coordinate activities with the outside agency to avoid damage. Operate and maintain heavy equipment such as backhoes, loaders, cranes, trenchers and dump trucks. Identify, locate, and mark buried water distribution piping and facilities. Maintain a variety of records and reports related to the operations of the water system. Complete Work Orders and Service Orders. Assists and trains less experienced staff, as required. Conduct inspections for violations related to use of water. Turn on/off water services. Read and record meter readings. Perform minor plumbing work as requested. Collect water samples and perform water quality tests, as required. Prepare and maintain accurate reports and records. Respond to emergency conditions on a 24-hour basis, including holidays. Perform a wide range of physically demanding and strenuous tasks including entering of confined spaces.

WATER SYSTEM WORKER III

Distinguishing Characteristics:

This is the journey level in the Water System Worker class series. Incumbents must have a minimum of three years' experience in the repair, maintenance, construction, and operation of a water distribution system. They typically work with minimal guidance and supervision. This class is distinguished from Water System Worker I/II class assignment in that the Water System Worker I/II class assignments require substantially more supervision and the Water System Worker III typically provide direction and oversight on field job and designated as the "competent person" onsite.

Essential Functions:

Effectively make temporary repairs to streets and alleys as needed. Maintain, clean, disinfect, and perform repairs to wells, and pumping station facilities as required. Properly sets up a job site for safe operations involving but not limited to trench shoring, road closure, arrow board operations and proper cone placement, 811 procedures, and other related safety practices. Properly determines appropriate types of valves for different applications as found throughout the city. Routinely maintain, clean, wash disinfect and perform repairs to sampling stations.
