The Watchman is responsible for monitoring the Springfield, NH facility at Durgin and Crowell Lumber Co Inc. to ensure operational flow and safety. This full-time role supports the lumber and wood pellet production environment by maintaining a safe, organized workspace and responding to on-site needs as assigned.
Schedule:
Sunday, Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday:
4:00 PM-5:00 AM Hours may vary based on production needs. Training may take place on alternate scheduled evenings, beginning at 4:00 PM and continuing until mutually agreed upon time. The training schedule will remain in place until performance has been evaluated and the employee transitions to the standard schedule.
Key Responsibilities:
Boiler Operation Monitor boiler and turbine operation to ensure safe, proper, and efficient performance; report any issues promptly. Remove ash and empty stick barrels and the gray ash cart as required, including weekend cleaning. Monitor and maintain water softener salt levels, refilling as needed. Property Security Secure buildings not in use by ensuring lights are off and doors are closed and locked, with particular attention to the warehouse on weekends. Monitor property activity and maintain awareness of employees, contractors, visitors, work locations, and schedules. Conduct routine property checks and address unauthorized access, loitering, or scrap picking in a friendly and professional manner. Boiler Loading Load wood chips into the boiler bunkers and maintain adequate fuel levels throughout the shift. Use wood chips from the mill bunker first; once depleted, use the wood chip pile near the Paint Shop. Maintaining a Presence Patrol the property and conduct building walkthroughs throughout each shift using the utility vehicle as needed. Walk through each building at least three times per shift to monitor conditions and identify issues. Trucker Assistance Assist truck drivers with locating trailers, loads, and required paperwork. Contact the Kilns Manager using the watchman phone if required paperwork is unavailable in the Planer Mill office. Equipment Fueling and Maintenance Maintain assigned equipment by checking fuel and coolant levels and keeping equipment clean and in good working condition. Clean windows, pressure wash equipment as needed, and keep maintenance tools and items in their designated locations. Fire Watch Monitor areas where welding, grinding, or other hot work has occurred for potential fire hazards. Inspect and thoroughly saturate hot work areas with water as required during the first four hours following completion of the work.
Secondary Responsibilities:
Mill Piles Clean and remove waste piles throughout the mill using the loader and dispose of material in the designated scrap pile. De-Barker Cleaning Clean fines from de-barking conveyors and transfer material to the designated bark bin, primarily on weekends. Road & Yard Maintenance Maintain roads and yard areas by filling potholes, removing excess wood chips, and clearing debris. Winter Maintenance Plow and maintain roads and hills during winter to ensure safe access and traffic flow. Apply sand and salt to parking and high-traffic areas; use sand only on dirt roadways. Assisting Mill Workers Assist mill personnel with general cleanup and housekeeping as needed. Assigned Duties Perform other duties and projects as assigned or as necessary to support facility operations.
Required Skills & Abilities:
Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Strong decision-making and problem-solving skills. Dependable with a strong work ethic.
Preferred Education:
High School Diploma or GED preferred.
Physical & Work Requirements:
Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and perform physical tasks for extended periods. Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions. Ability to navigate uneven, slippery, and elevated surfaces and climb stairs and ladders as required. Ability to safely operate company vehicles, equipment, and maintenance machinery. Ability to perform manual tasks, including shoveling and general property maintenance. Ability to wear required personal protective equipment, including hearing protection in designated areas.
