Machine Shop Technical Planner

Job Description

TECHNICAL PLANNER
Position Summary The Technical Planner serves as the primary coordinator for customer rolls throughout the repair process. This individual evaluates incoming rolls, develops quotations, creates work plans, coordinates production requirements, and manages communication between customers, account managers, and the shop floor. The Technical Planner ensures each project is completed safely, accurately, on time, and in accordance with customer specifications. This position can best be described as the industrial equivalent of a service advisor at an automotive dealership. The Technical Planner serves as the central point of contact, guiding each customer project from initial inspection through final delivery. Customer and Sales Support Review customer requirements, specifications, and inspection reports. Communicate with customers and Account Managers to define service requirements. Develop detailed quotations for roll repair and maintenance services. Explain technical recommendations and repair options to customers and sales personnel. Notify customers and Account Managers when additional work is required beyond the original scope. Provide technical support to customers, Account Managers, and internal personnel. Project Planning and Coordination Evaluate incoming rolls and inspection reports. Develop work scopes and manufacturing plans for each project. Create shop routings, work instructions, and quality requirements. Schedule transportation of rolls to and from customer locations when required. Order tooling, materials, outside services, and replacement components necessary to complete work. Monitor project progress and communicate status updates to customers and sales personnel. Participate in planning and scheduling meetings. Production and Shop Support Serve as the primary liaison between the customer, Account Manager, and production team. Work closely with mechanics, machinists, grinder operators, and supervisors. Assist in resolving technical issues that arise during production. Review completed work for accuracy and compliance with customer requirements. Support continuous improvement initiatives and process optimization efforts. Qualifications Associate degree or Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Manufacturing Technology, Industrial Technology, or related field preferred. Equivalent experience in machining, manufacturing, maintenance, or industrial operations may be substituted for formal education. Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting ability. Understanding of machining processes, manufacturing methods, and dimensional tolerances. Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and technical specifications. Strong project management, organizational, and communication skills. Experience in a machine shop, manufacturing environment, maintenance operation, or job-shop environment preferred.
