Technical and Residential Interior Designer
Job Description
ABOUT THE ROLE
Sara Lynn Brennan Interiors is seeking a talented Technical & Residential Interior Designer to join our growing team. This role is ideal for an early-career residential designer who enjoys both sides of the design process—the precision and problem-solving of technical design/build documentation and the creativity of residential space planning, furnishings, sourcing, and presentation. The primary focus of this position will be supporting our luxury new construction and renovation projects by translating approved designs and selections into detailed construction drawings and documentation for our project specification books. This designer will also play an essential role in supporting Foundations, the residential furnishings design service offered through our retail store and showroom, All Things Home. Working collaboratively with our ATH Manager, this person will provide the design expertise behind space planning, furniture layouts, scale and proportion, product selection, and polished client presentations. We are ideally looking for someone with 2-4 years of professional residential interior design experience who has already developed strong technical drafting skills while also having meaningful, hands-on experience with residential furnishings. This is not a drafting-only position, and it is not an entry-level/new-graduate position. The right candidate needs to understand how residential spaces are both built and furnished.
WHAT YOU'LL DOTECHNICAL DESIGN + CONSTRUCTION DOCUMENTATION
This will be the primary focus of the position. Working closely with our Lead Designers, you will translate approved design concepts and selections into clear, accurate, detailed documentation that communicates SLB's design intent to builders, contractors, installers, vendors, and trades.
Responsibilities will include:
Creating detailed floor plans, interior elevations, and design/build drawings using AutoCAD or comparable professional drafting software Developing detailed tile layouts, including patterns, orientation, transitions, niches, feature areas, and other installation-specific details Documenting plumbing fixtures, decorative lighting, hardware, and other design elements, including locations, dimensions, and mounting heights Creating drawings and details for cabinetry, millwork, built-ins, wall treatments, trim, and other custom interior elements Clearly documenting materials, finishes, dimensions, placement, heights, and other critical installation information Coordinating technical drawings with architectural plans, cabinetry drawings, vendor specifications, and approved design selections Assisting in the creation and maintenance of comprehensive project specification books, including the construction/build drawings necessary to clearly communicate design intent Updating drawings and documentation as selections, dimensions, or field conditions change Reviewing drawings for accuracy, consistency, and completeness before they are issued Identifying missing information, discrepancies, or potential conflicts and proactively bringing them to the appropriate team member Working collaboratively with Lead Designers to ensure technical documentation accurately reflects the approved creative direction This position is not responsible for independently establishing the overall creative direction or leading SLB projects. Rather, you will play an important role in turning the design vision into clear, accurate, executable information.
RESIDENTIAL INTERIOR DESIGN
Through our store, All Things Home, our design service provides clients with professional guidance for furnishings-focused residential projects. In this part of the role, you will work closely with the All Things Home Manager. Sourcing will be collaborative—the ATH Manager brings extensive knowledge of our vendors, products, showroom, and client needs, while you bring the professional residential design expertise necessary to ensure those selections work successfully within the space and together as a cohesive design.
Responsibilities will include:
Creating residential floor plans and furniture layouts Space planning for functionality, circulation, scale, and proportion Collaborating with the ATH Manager to source furniture, lighting, rugs, art, accessories, and décor from retail and trade/wholesale vendors Evaluating potential selections for dimensions, scale, function, placement, and overall design cohesion Providing design guidance as product selections are developed and refined Creating polished, client-facing presentations and visualizations using SketchUp, DesignFiles, or comparable residential design/presentation software Incorporating client feedback and preparing revisions to layouts and presentations Identifying appropriate substitutions when products are unavailable, outside budget, or not appropriate for the space Helping transform individual product selections into a thoughtfully planned, cohesive residential interior Professional residential furnishings experience is essential for this position. You should be able to move comfortably from developing a technical bathroom elevation to space planning a living room and understand the very different design considerations involved in each.
PROCUREMENT + PROJECT SUPPORT
As workload allows, this position will also assist with procurement and project execution for both Sara Lynn Brennan Interiors and All Things Home.
Responsibilities may include:
Assisting with purchase orders and placing approved orders Confirming product specifications, quantities, finishes, pricing, and lead times Reviewing order acknowledgments for accuracy Following up with vendors regarding production, shipping, and delivery status Maintaining accurate order tracking information and project spreadsheets Communicating delays, backorders, discontinued products, damages, or other issues to the appropriate team member Assisting the design team with additional project execution needs as required Previous procurement experience is a plus, but not required. We are willing to train the right designer in our procurement systems and processes.
WHO WE'RE LOOKING FOR
The ideal candidate has: 2+ years of professional residential interior design experience Strong proficiency in AutoCAD or similar professional drafting software used to create construction/design drawings for residential specification books Professional experience creating interior elevations and technical design/build documentation Meaningful, hands-on experience with residential furnishings and space planning Experience sourcing furniture, lighting, rugs, art, accessories, and décor Familiarity with trade and/or wholesale furnishings vendors A strong understanding of furniture scale, proportion, circulation, and placement The ability to read and interpret architectural plans, elevations, cabinetry drawings, and vendor specifications Experience creating professional client-facing design presentations Strong attention to detail and organizational skills The ability to manage multiple assignments, projects, and deadlines Strong written and verbal communication skills A collaborative attitude and willingness to work across different areas of the design process The confidence to ask questions, identify missing information, and proactively problem-solve Experience with SketchUp, DesignFiles, or comparable residential design and presentation software is strongly preferred. Experience with custom residential new construction, renovations, specification books, procurement, or luxury residential design is a plus.
YOU MAY BE A GREAT FIT
IF... You love the technical side of interior design but don't want to spend your entire career simply drafting. You can look at an approved bathroom design and understand how to document the tile layout, fixture placement, materials, and installation details needed to communicate that design to a builder. But you can also look at an empty living room and understand how it should function—where the sofa belongs, what size rug it needs, how large the chairs should be, whether the furniture is appropriately scaled, and how the individual selections work together. You appreciate beautiful design, but you care just as much about accuracy, measurements, organization, and execution. You're still early in your career and eager to learn and grow, but you've had enough professional residential experience to contribute meaningfully from day one. And you're excited by the opportunity to work across the residential design process—from construction drawings and specifications to space planning, furnishings, procurement, and final installation.
IMPORTANT EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Because of the hybrid nature of this position, candidates must have meaningful professional residential interior design experience. This position is not intended for new graduates. Candidates whose professional experience is primarily in commercial, workplace, hospitality, healthcare, or institutional design without meaningful residential furnishings experience will not be the right fit for this particular position. Likewise, candidates who have strong residential furnishings sourcing experience but do not have professional experience creating technical drawings and design/build documentation will not meet the requirements of the role. We are specifically looking for someone who has already worked within the residential design industry and understands both the technical and furnishings sides of creating a home.
