The Department of Performing Arts seeks an adjunct instructor to teach Musical Theater Scene Study. This course focuses on the integration of acting, vocal performance, and storytelling within musical theater scenes. The ideal candidate will guide students through textual and musical analysis, character development, and performance execution. The ability to accompany on piano during class sessions is strongly preferred to support active coaching and real-time musical direction.

Responsibilities

The primary responsibility of adjunct faculty is to deliver instruction in the manner determined by the department. In addition, faculty responsibilities may include:

Instruction & Coaching:

Teach scene study techniques specifically tailored to musical theater repertoire, ranging from classic Golden Age to contemporary musical theater.

Integrative Performance:

Direct and coach students on how to seamlessly transition between spoken dialogue and song, maintaining character stakes and narrative drive.

Repertoire Selection:

Assign appropriate duets, trios, and small ensemble scenes that match student vocal ranges and developmental needs.

In-Class Accompaniment:

Accompany students on piano during rehearsals, exercises, and work sessions (if applicable).

Assessment & Feedback:

Provide constructive, actionable feedback on acting technique, vocal choices, physicalization, and musical accuracy; evaluate student progress through performances and written reflections.

Classroom Management:

Syllabus creation, regular office hours/student consultation, grading, and adherence to departmental guidelines.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree required along with relevant professional or teaching experience.

Demonstrated professional experience as a musical theater performer, director, or music director.

Proven teaching experience in acting or musical theater at the collegiate, conservatory, or professional level.

Preferred experience includes teaching at the college or university level.

The ability to work with students from diverse backgrounds.

A demonstrated, vibrant Christian faith compatible with the mission of Azusa Pacific University.

Workload

Assigned teaching duties will not exceed 9 units per semester; office hours and additional duties may be assigned. Total workload will not exceed 29 hours per week, nor 24 units per 12-month period.

Compensation

$25.32 - $27.32/hour (Using a 3 unit full semester appointment as a pay guide). The actual hourly rate will be determined by the units, course length, experience, and rank of the candidate. Adjuncts are paid on an hourly basis which includes preparation and teaching time.
