JOB DESCRIPTION

Standby Coach HFA is seeking a reliable and flexible Standby Coach to provide substitute coverage for our afterschool sports programs across designated school sites. Standby Coaches must be available from 1:30-5:30 PM on assigned days , remain within a designated coverage area, and be prepared to respond to staffing needs as soon as possible. This is a dual-role position that also requires participation in HFA Whittier League games as a referee, coach, or other assigned game-day support. The ideal candidate is dependable, responsive, and passionate about providing quality sports programming for youth.

Locations:

Downey, El Monte, and Whittier. Candidates must be ready to begin with season preparation as early as September 2026 .

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Coaching practices for TK-8 students at Downey Unified School District (DUSD), Whittier City School District (WCSD), and/or Mountain View School District (MVSD) campuses.
• Utilizing HFA coaching curriculum and adjusting curriculum according to different levels and ages
• Mentoring volunteer assistant coaches from local high schools and colleges
• Setting up and cleaning up practice environment
• Assuring all equipment is organized and put away after practice
• Maintaining communication with HFA staff, volunteers, and families
• Creating a fun and encouraging environment for players and volunteer coaches of all levels
• Attend required staff meetings , trainings, and professional development sessions
• Follow all HFA policies , procedures, safety protocols, and partner school requirements.

Whittier League Responsibilities In addition to serving as a Standby Coach, the employee will be required to participate in HFA Whittier League games as assigned. Whittier League responsibilities may include serving as a referee, coach, or other game-day support role based on HFA's staffing needs.

The employee is expected to:

Attend and participate in assigned Whittier League games. Serve as a referee or coach as directed by HFA. Arrive at the designated game location on time and prepared to fulfill their assigned role. Follow all HFA league rules, procedures, safety expectations, and conduct standards. Communicate with HFA as soon as possible if an emergency or unforeseen circumstance prevents them from fulfilling an assigned league responsibility. Participation in Whittier League games is an essential responsibility of this position and is part of the employee's scheduled Standby Coach hours. The employee may be assigned Whittier League responsibilities during standby hours. Compensation Standby Coaches will be compensated based on the duties they are performing during their scheduled work hours. During scheduled Standby Coach hours , the coach will be paid at the designated Standby Coach rate for the time they are required to remain available and ready to provide coverage. If a Standby Coach is assigned to a substitute coaching assignment or Whittier League Game , they will be paid at the Standby Coach rate for the portion of their scheduled hours spent on standby and will transition to their normal coaching rate once their substitute or league assignment begins. If a substitute or league assignment begins before the coach' scheduled standby hours, the coach will be paid at their normal Coaching rate for the hours worked on that assignment. Compensation will be based on the actual hours worked in each capacity and will be paid at the applicable rate for those duties.

Example :

If a coach is scheduled for standby from 1:30-5:30 PM and is assigned to a Whittier League game from 2:30-5:30 PM , the coach will be paid the Standby Coach rate from 1:30-2:30 PM and their normal Coaching rate from 2:30-5:30 PM .

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

must have completed at least 48 units or have an AA Degree in College must be passionate about inspiring youth through sports and leadership experience coaching school-age children experience leading groups of school-age children must be 18+ have a mode of transportation to get to practice in a timely manner have a positive attitude!

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• 2 years of coaching experience

Bilingual:

English and Spanish

WORKING CONDITIONS

This position requires onsite instruction at multiple DUSD, WCSD, MVSD, and LAUSD elementary and middle schools located in Downey, Whittier, El Monte.

WORK SCHEDULE

This is a part-time position. Substitute Hours are from 1:30-5:30 PM (4 hours), Monday-Friday , in alignment with DUSD, WCSD, MVSD, LAUSD's 2026-2027 school year. Substitutes will be asked to fill in when needed! Once called in Substitutes will receive the Coaching rate for the scheduled Coaching time.

Duration:

September 14th - May 28th (Monday-Friday; excluding certain school breaks and Federal Holidays). Additionally you will be working League Games in Whittier (WCSD) starting from October 2026-February 2027. These days are set.

PAY RATE

We offer the following pay rates:

Coaching:

starting rate of $24/hour (Sport Practices and Game Days) Standby Coach /

Training:

flat rate of $18/hour (Substitue Hours, Professional Development, Sexual Harassment / Mandated Reporter, Sport Certification / Licensure, etc.)

REQUIREMENTS

Background check clearance CPR & First Aid Certification Mandated Reporter (General & School Personnel) Sexual Harassment Prevention Training (Nonsupervisory) TB test clearance from doctor (Due within the first 30 days of coaching)
