QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
All coaches of interscholastic activity programs who assume full responsibility for students under their direction at any level shall be either: Hold a current teaching or administrative certificate from the Colorado Department of Education. Be employed as a teacher, counselor, or administrator for at least 50% of the school day in a private school. Be a registered volunteer with Cañon City Schools.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND EXPECTATIONS COACHES' PROFESSIONAL AND PERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS AND EXPECTATIONS
Rapport :
Develop strong rapport with diverse individuals and groups, including: Team personnel, students, faculty, administration, maintenance staff, and parents. Community members, spectators, officials, and fellow coaches within the conference. Media representatives and the broader community. Demonstrate competency and build trust to foster positive relationships.
Cooperation :
Exhibit a high level of cooperation in all duties and responsibilities.
Collaborate effectively with:
Athletic directors and school administrators. Other staff members, team members, and parents.
Leadership and Public Relations:
Display diligence, enthusiasm, integrity, honesty, and a passion for the sport. Maintain exemplary personal appearance and dress, including proper coaching attire and physical condition. Uphold a positive public demeanor and etiquette that reflects well on the team, athletic department, school, and community.
Discipline :
Enforce discipline among coaches, players, and support staff. Serve as a role model by upholding: School codes, game rules, and ideals of good sportsmanship. Positive behavior and attitudes among participants and spectators. Motivate staff, players, and the community to achieve team and individual goals.
Improvement :
Engage in ongoing self-improvement by: Attending district meetings, rules clinics, workshops, and specialized training opportunities. Joining professional organizations and coaches' associations. Staying current with literature in journals, newspapers, magazines, and other media. Utilize enrichment opportunities to enhance knowledge and performance.
COACHING TECHNIQUES
Use sound and acceptable teaching practices. Run well-organized practice sessions. Complete pre-season planning well before the start date. Adhere to a highly efficient and technically sound program of injury prevention. When injuries occur, follow a prescribed routine and communicate well with the patient, trainer, and parents. Construct a well-organized game plan. Develop a sound system for equipment accountability. Keep assistant coaches, volunteers, student managers, and statisticians informed about expectations. Cooperate fully with building staff, other programs, media, support staff, administration, etc. Cooperate fully with maintenance staff, transportation, and others supporting the program.
COACHES' RESPONSIBILITIES
To the players on the team The coach must promote and teach only ethical, aggressive, and fair play while always stressing good sportsmanship. The coach is responsible for teaching skills and techniques pertinent to the sport and continually modeling and monitoring behavior and academics. It shall be the responsibility of the coach to aid in the development of the overall person. The coach should be fair and impartial with players and sensitive to individual differences, needs, interests, temperaments, attitudes, and tolerances. To the school and district A coach is highly visible in the community and may significantly impact the athlete, the home, the workplace, and community organizations. A coach's actions should constantly create confidence in the coach, the school, and the district. A coach always owes their school maximal effort and loyalty. They must strive for excellence throughout the program, department, and school. A coach should treat the faculty, staff, and student body with dignity and respect. A coach should support all endorsed school activities. A coach should encourage the student body to be polite, courteous, and fair to everyone involved in a contest. The coach should maintain high discipline and expectations and be firm, fair, and consistent in enforcing those expectations. To the profession A coach at Canon City Schools should continue professional growth in both academic teaching and athletic coaching. The coach should participate in professional growth opportunities whenever possible. To fellow coaches Although the head coach must assume leadership responsibilities, all assistant coaches should be encouraged to think independently, and communication lines should allow ideas to be exchanged appropriately. Disagreements with fellow coaches should be discussed privately and promptly. The head coach should expect all staff to contribute time, effort, thought, and energy to the program. The head coach should communicate expectations clearly before the season. Assistant coaches should be valued and praised for their contributions to the program's success. Assistant coaches should have a strong sense of allegiance to the program. They must be willing and able to do things they may not wish or even like to do. They must fulfill their responsibility to the head coach, the athletes, and the sport itself. They must be willing to give a full measure of time, effort, thought, and energy to the program and the head coach. To other coaches in the athletic program A coach must remember that their sport is part of Canon City Schools' total athletic educational program. Therefore, it is essential to support, promote, and cooperate with all the other coaches and activity sponsors for the well-being of the program as a whole. Coaches should communicate regularly about athletes and off-season schedules so athletes can participate in various activities. A coach should support and cooperate with other coaches whenever possible. All remarks should reflect confidence in one's fellow coaches. Coaches and other faculty members must have strong, harmonious interpersonal relationships. To faculty members A coach is expected to cooperate with every faculty member. If the coach collaborates with academic teachers by allowing an athlete to make up a test or homework during practice, respect for the athletic program, coaching staff, and athletic values will be significantly enhanced. To the physical plant Each coach is responsible for: Keeping the practice area and locker rooms in order Storing equipment and using equipment properly Keeping locker rooms and storage areas locked Filing proper maintenance requests for large items of need Pride in the equipment and facilities is paramount to all athletes, coaches, and the community.
