PRIMARY PURPOSE

The primary duties are to assist in team coaching, teaching, training, and individual student athlete skill development, to prepare the team for competition. Other duties include, but are not limited to: Assists in monitoring academic, social, and personal development of student-athletes. Assists in identifying and recruiting academically and athletically talented student-athletes for the sport program. Assists in promotion and development of program by creating and maintaining effective relationships with alumni, donors, and community members. Assists in the planning and implementation of camps and clinics. Participates in events as a representative of the department and sport program. Maintains knowledge and remain current regarding all appropriate NAIA, The Sun Conference, Department of Athletics, and University compliance issues, policies, and procedures. The assistant coach will adhere to all guidelines and regulations set forth by the Sun Conference, NAIA and Ave Maria University.

Major Duties:

Student-Athlete Development - Directing and supervising all activities relative to the teaching, training and skill development of student-athletes in preparation for competition. Assists in providing technical skill instruction to aid in the development of student-athletes at practices. Conduct individual training sessions with student-athletes geared at skill development. Help to develop and execute practice plans that will prepare the team physically and mentally for competition. Integrate the Catholic faith through mentorship and virtue development. Recruitment and Retention -Help to manage the overall recruitment and retention of the program. Evaluate talent and recruit prospective student-athletes who will be successful in the classroom and contribute positively to the program and the University community. Communicate via phone, emails and letters, with prospective student-athletes and parents. Plan and direct the scouting of prospective student-athletes including, but not limited to determining the recruiting events and competitions to attend and the prospective student-athletes to be evaluated. Assist with on-campus official and unofficial visits of prospective student-athletes per University and NAIA policies. Academics, Service, Marketing, Public Relations Assist in the monitoring of academics amongst student-athletes ensuring student-athletes progress in degree advancement and meet eligibility standards. Assist in the development of fundraising events for the program within the framework of the university and departmental guidelines. Reinforce the AMU mission and ideals of devotion to service by designing appropriate events for the team to give back to the community and serve others.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

General knowledge of the softball sport, rules & regulations. Must possess excellent teaching, organizational and communication skills, as well as the ability to pay close attention to details, interact effectively and appropriately with student athletes and evaluate prospects. Must show a demonstrated knowledge of and strong commitment to the mission of the university and the teachings of the Catholic Church. The assistant coach is responsible for supporting the university in the formation of student athletes in the intellectual and moral virtues of the Catholic faith.

PHYSICAL SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Requires ordinary ambulatory skills sufficient to teach the fundamentals of the sport, coach practices, games, travel to other locations; and the ability to stand, walk and manipulate (lift, carry, move) light to medium weights of 10 - 50 pounds. Requires good hand-eye coordination, arm, hand and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp, and visual acuity to use a telephone, computer keyboard, operate equipment and read technical information.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is performed indoors and outdoors with potential for outdoor exposure to high temperatures, and safety and health hazards related to sport and weight room training. Will travel for recruiting and competition.
